HTC TyTN / Imate JasJam

Hi Guys

I have been planning a PDA/Phone for ever and looked first at JASJAR (2 big) K-JAM now being replaced with the new TyTN or JASJAM? Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 2? Is the JAM an OEM version of TyTN? They have the same spec.

I just called Vodacom and MTN to see where and if I can get either. The answer tiffy dude @ Voda never heard of either of them. The guy at MTN only knows the JASJAM and gave me a price of R2650 on a 220min contract but tells me no idea when they will have. What’s the best way to get ones name down for either of them?

Thanks… Yes re-branding or better known amongst IT Guru’s OEM deals is common in the IT industry. Its however very confusing for the average JOE just looking for a device and even more difficult for sales reps as they often selling against their own product. Its even more confusing in a small market such as SA because they often through a distributor in to the mix. Such as in the case with Leaf who used to distribute i-mate and now doing HTC. At the end of the day it’s just the politics that have changed and not the product.

Putting all that aside when and where can one get either the TyTN or JASJAM.

Also if Leaf has moved over to HTC is there now a new distributor for i-mate range?

Until recently, I was quite confused about the i-Mate naming Jas this and Jam that, and wasn't even aware that i-Mate was not the manufacturer.

If it helps, the manufacturer is a company called HTC, and there are several re-branded names for each of the PDA-phones, and i-Mate is just one company that re-brands and resells HTC PDA-phones...

The i-Mate JasJam is the re-branded HTC TyTN, spec-sheet...

The i-Mate JasJar is the re-branded HTC Qtek 9000.

Just to correct you, yes the i-Mate Jasjam is actually a HTP TyTN, but the
i-Mate Jasjar is the HTC Universal. Qtek 9000 is infact another brand and is the same phone as the HTC Universal/i-Mate Jasjar.

There is no such thing as a HTC Qtek 9000.;)

Good day,

As far as I can remember there's currently a problem with the JASJAM and the USIM and that's what they working on at the moment.......

You will have to tell that to HTC then, bcos it is the name that HTC has on its website for what is otherwise known as an i-Mate JasJar, seriously follow the link I posted for the HTC QTek 9000...

I had a look on the link in your post. It is a HTC website yes, but they call the phone Qtek 9000, not HTC Qtek 9000. ;)

I spoke to a salesperson at Leaf this morning. Aparently the phone (HTC TyTN) has been approved by the networks last week Thursday/Friday and will be available soon (on contracts). It is available for cash from them (Leaf) already for about R8000.

Does my eyes deceive me? Is this for real? MTNDD, can you confirm this? Or does the approved companies exclude mtn and vodacom?

TyTn prices

Prices on the Tytn

Cacell - R8650 incl VAT
Leaf special - R8299.20 incl VAT

Neither Leaf nor Cacell would budge on price. :(

It's a good thing that i-Mate doesn't brand the phones anymore.

Look at this. Exactly the same phone.

i-Mate Jasjam = R9850
HTC TyTN = R8650

So the branding made the price much higher. I mean, i-Mate had to make some money out of this.:D

Here is the reply from Midrand

Thanks MTNDD

No that is not true. We experiencing voice quality issues with this unit.

Is it worth waiting for it then? Do they have to change to phone to fix it or can it be changed at MTN's side. If we have to wait 6 months it may not be worth it...

I remember waiting for the i-Mate Jasjar and then after a few months I decided to go for the i-Mate Pocket PC because I couldn't wait any longer. Then about 6 months after I got my Pocket PC the Jasjar was available. So maybe its worth waiting for it.

I would agree with Piesang
