ATV2 plugs into the TV via HDMI. Your computer/iPad/iPhone streams to the ATV2. To use it on more than 1 TV you'd have to unplug it and connect to another TV.

Apple tends to keep pricing fairly stable so I would guess AT2 will also be $99. As has already been mentioned in this thread the ATV3 is likely to see a resolution upgrade to 1080p and the addition of bluetooth 4.0.
 
1080p and an A5X chip inside..

Can the apple TV 2+ function without a pc or laptop running iTunes if you connect just an external hard drive to after installing ATV flash?

It would have to be a networked drive. The micro-USB port is only capable at the hardware level of acting as a slave device. To drive a USB disk it would need to be capable of acting as a host device.
 
AT2 is awesome and 3 will be even better, however, spend a little bit more and buy a mac mini and setup Plex on it, which IMO is a much better solution, as there is just so much more you can do with it.

A friend of mine is traveling to the US next month. He's going to buy 2 ATV's for me. Should work out to about R1500/R1600 for both. I would also love to buy a Mac Mini but its not a "little bit more". Its R6299. Thats just for the entry level version.

I will buy one later in the year. It is obviously a much better overall system compared to the ATV. I'll just have to wait for some cash...

ZAStore is Core's apple store... so not officially Apple, but Offically Core's who is Apple's authorised distributor.
 
You can buy them from online retailers in ZA though, they import them I take it

Im lookin for a 2nd hand ATV 2 but I cant find one anywhere... :(
