Huawei Android 8.0 / Oreo update

Got it recently from Vodacom, due to uncertainty as to who will actually get the phone (three contracts were requested weeks ago via the online portal but only one phone arrived, STILL waiting for someone specific at Vodacom to get back to me) I have yet to actually put a sim card in the phone and mostly keep it turned off.... could this be the holdup on receiving the update?

I received the Oreo update on my P8 Lite (2017) today after I connected it to a WiFi connection for the first time in a while.

I only use the phone as a music player though, ever since I upgraded to an S9+, so I probably won't download the 2.94 GB update in the near future.

I understand your frustration, as my WiFi router is on the cellular connection. The same happened to me on iPhone and it was a big pain, as my monthly bundle was only 2GB. Long time ago, I was screaming....

Fortunately there is a solution. On my Y6 with Oreo there is an option: Setting -> System update -> options icon -> "Auto-download over WiFi". Turn it off.

If you upgrade now, and set this option (it should be the same on your phone), it will prevent from further updates. If you don't (and you don't have such option), the next OTA full upgrade will be downloaded again.

My guess was right, as soon as I inserted a sim card the phone forced a restart and detected a the Oreo update..... An odd thing is even before I updated it changed my language to french all by itself and force restarted the phone. Must be some kind of bug, had to puzzle through the settings to make it english again.
