Hi I wonder if anybody can help me. I've been living in the UK for the last while but am returning to SA for good in December and I have 2 Huawei modems, a e220 & a e160, from a UK service provider. I bought both on PAYG here. What I need to know is how to unlock them to be used on the Vodacom network when I return? I'll be using them on a Macbook.

Thanks,

MB

Most of the companies who advertise datacard unlocking services on the Internet use DC-Unlocker software from what I can see. They supply software together with a dongle to the unlocking companies for ~150 Euros and have recently introduced an online service which is similar to the one offered by Kulankendi. The dongle option allows unlimited unlocking of certain models such as the E220, however, there is an additional charge for unlocking of later models such as the E272 and E160G etc. My guess is that the Cape Town service I referred to above uses the DC unlocking software plus dongle. You could also look on ebay in the UK to see if you can find any cheaper services or try one of the cell phone repair shops in your area.

Typically the network that locked them must unlock them, so I don't think VC can directly help.

But it might be worth a shot to contact Huawei in JHB and ask them. They're the ones who actually unlock the devices.

Another option could be to sell them in the UK and rather buy a newer generation modem here such as the E272 which will give you access to HSUPA.
