Huawei E220 locked

if i put a mtn card in it does not pick that network up. not sure about the card

And you are in MTN coverage?

Have a look at the thread on this forum on using MTN SIMs in the E220.

I'm pretty sure it's not networked locked. I know for a fact no locked E220's ever came into the country.

But you might have something else going on. Maybe test with another SIM (Cell-C, Virgin, etc.)

May be your E220 software is setup for 3G Only mode and don't have MTN 3G available in your area?

If it were SIM locked I'm sure you'd get some sort of error message!

Go to Settings > Choose Connection Type and try 3G Preferred with your MTN SIM Card.

Its the software most likely that is locked , flash unbranded software to the device

Maybe the modem is just broken. It cant be Network Locked, as it was sold in SA. Cant Pick up Vodacom, Cant pick up MTN.

Have you put in the SIM Card Correctly?

I just had another thought, take it to your nearest Vodacare. It may be Blacklisted.

They can do a IMEI Validation and check if it is indeed Blacklisted.

Incorrect.

Take more water with it! No way is this correct!!

Most definitely incorrect. I've seen a Vodacom SIM work on a MTN Dashboard. I've seen a Vodacom SIM work on a MTC Dash.

And technically Mobile Partner and Mobile Connect is unbranded software to a Vodafone Branded E220, and i know a Vodacom SIM works in both.

how do we fix it
There is an MTN-specific firmware that works around the problem with their 64K SIMs (I think it's a missing file on the SIM, v3g has the specifics), so one solution might be to download the firmware from MTN and flash that on to your friend's E220, but I'm not sure about the warranty implications.

Another solution would be to try different size MTN SIMs to determine whether that is indeed the problem you are experiencing. (Go through your contacts and invite all your 083 and 073 friends around and try their SIMs :))

Once you establish that you do have an affected 64K SIM, you could arrange with MTN to do a SIM swap and replace the 64K SIM with one of their 128K USIMs.
