Are there any drivers that could help me install this device on my windows 2003 server box.

Thanks.

Cant install software on windows 2003 server

Please can anyone help? I have just bought a brand new Hsdpa at my local vodacom shop. I cant get the software to install on my Hp compaq 6710's notebook, with ms windows 2003 server. The message i get is "You need administrative rights to install this software on windows 2000 server sp4 and xp sp2" I am logged on as admin. If I plug the device in , it says installing, but hangs and only installs the vodafone run time components. Have tried to disable firewall and antivirus software, nothing works. I am really desperate at this stage!!!
Just a add on, have spoken to the guys at vodacom. the one guy said the software cant be installed on any server software. this is bull , because i have installed the same software on my 2000 server, no problems at all, i jst can lug my entire pc around all the time!! it's a Huwai e220 usb modem. The 2003 finds the drivers for the modem, but gui interface for vodafone wont install. anyone out there please help!!

Hi,

I also experienced similar problems. The following might help you:
1. Make sure you have the latest version of Vodafone Mobile Connect software...its around version 9.2.1.6545....or download from vodacom.co.za website

2. Manually install the drivers...when the system asks for the drivers, point it to : \program files\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Connect\Driver\pccard\xp

You would have gotten this from the VMC software you downloaded from vodacom's website in point 1 above.

3. The install the VMC software, but do not choose WLAN...this is not compatable with Windows 2003 server, and its the reason why you're getting the errors you described above. SO, in other words, do a custom install, and only select the main VMC component with SMS.

The above should get you going quite well, it did for me.
If all else fails, you need to download a utility from microsoft called application compatability...or somthing similar..I don't have this utility with me.

If it still fails, then let me know..i have a utility that removes all restrictions for running software on a Windows 2003 server :)

I also have something that can enable your video hardware accelaration..so you can watch dvd's as well ;)

Anees.

Ok, make sure when it asks you for the drivers, point it to the following location: \program files\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Connect\Driver\pccard\xp\Huawei

and let the OS install the drivers for you. Its easier if you copy the VMC software to a place on your hard drive.

What do you mean "Which one of the exes should i install " . No need for any exes for the drivers..

If you're talking about the VMC software, you can run the VMC setup icon which calls the .msi installer file..or you can click the .msi installer file directly and it will install.

Oh, just make sure you have .NET framework version 2.0 or later installed before installing the VMC.

Just send me a PM ...at work now, software is at home...

Txs guys,
according to the setup.cfg on the cd that i have ,it is ProductVersion=9.2.1.6545, which is the latest. Will pm you.:)

Hi Anees,
I try to run vmc_setup, but that is where i get the "administrative bla bla bla..." and the installer exits. If i go look at my event viewer, MSIinstaller gives the error. Waiting in anticipation for you program..:)

Just to ask some obvious questions:

1. You are logged on as administrator or with admin priveledges right ?
2. You have SP2 loaded ?
3. You have latest MSI installer ? SHould be version 3 or later
4. And you are running the latest VMC software...
5. copy the VMC cd to a place on the hard drive, and try installing it from there...

Hi Anees,
1. Yes, I have tried to log on as both Administrator and a user that has admin rights
2.Yes SP2 is loaded
3. MSI installer :Windows ® Installer. V 3.01.4000.3959
4. Yes the ProductVersion=9.2.1.6545 VMC
5.I have copied it to my local drive.

Problem persists. I have dowloaded the Compatibity Toolkit. Wil run it and let you know..

Hi Anees,
did you configure your server as a DC? Did you setup any special security policies ?

Hi Anees,

No, didn't set it up as a DC. Dunno why you would want to setup a laptop as a DC ??

No, no special security policies.

Run secpol.msc , under local, security policies, disable anything that asks for administrator priviledges..do this for both admin and normal users.

I must say, i didn't have to do this...

Sent you email with the stuff..

Hi,
Dunno why anyone would setup a notebook as a dc either, just thought i would check all the possibilities. Mine is not a dc either, have gone thru all the security settings. ms application comp tool, just says, it should be minor problem, vodafone is compatible with my os. Still no joy. havent received the email yet. considering downgrading to server 2000 again. i need to run server software as i do dev work and sql only runs on server. going slightly mad her. txs anyway for you help so far. i can send you my security policy settings to have alook at if you will?
I have even unintstalled my nokia n70 software, as i thought this would clash or be part of the problem

You could try installing the Huawei Mobile Partner software instead of the Vodafone software, it is available directly from Huawei's web site here.
The file to get is the one with 'UTPS' in the filename and the current version is dated November 16, 2007.

Hi ginggs,
I have already tried that route, if i try to install the one that is dated 16 nov 2007 my os tells me that the Huawei e220 usb modem is not detected although i can pick it on add/remove hardware as a cd rom drive. The drivers seems to be installed?

As far as I understand, the Server OS's are not directly suported. The guys suggested you install the drivers manually and to set up DUN.

Makes sense?

Why arent Server OS's supported? Curious to know in case i get a query regarding that.

By the way, i noticed on the packaging for the E220, under requirements, that it says Compatible with Windows 2000 and Windows XP, even though its Vista Ready. Wouldnt it make sense to Include Vista there also? Or on the front of the box a big sticker that says "VISTA READY!" or something.

And why not also add which OS's ARE NOT Supported?

Oh, a customer suggested (or rather asked) why Vodacom doesnt send out a SMS Notification to their Data Customers about newly available Software?

Its not finding the modem. Check in device manager under the USB Controllers wether the USB Composite Device is there, if not, you'll have to install it manually, which in turn will install the Data Interfaces (Modem and UI Interface) then the HMP Updater will find the modem and update it.

Try deleting the USB mass storage device in Device Manager and then get Windows to scan for new hardware (sounds pointless, but this has worked for me).

Try using the USB cable that has two USB plugs at the one end and plug both into your laptop. Some computers cannot supply enough current on a single port to power the E220.
