Huawei E220 & Windows 2003 Server

Try deleting the USB mass storage device in Device Manager and then get Windows to scan for new hardware (sounds pointless, but this has worked for me).

Try using the USB cable that has two USB plugs at the one end and plug both into your laptop. Some computers cannot supply enough current on a single port to power the E220.

What he needs to do is, right click the USB Mass Stirage Device in Device Manager, and "Update Drivers/Software" for it. Then select to choose hardware from a list, then he must go to "Standard USB Controller(or something similar - usually 3rd one from the top) and select the USB Composite Device.

It should automatically install the data interfaces, and if it doesnt, he needs to point it to where the drivers are located, usualy in Program Files.

Hi vg3,
Makes sense in a way, I can see the Huawei e220 as a cd rom, if i try to aplly the update from Huaweis website,as someone previously suggested,my os do not pick up the huawei as a modem, so upgrade is not possible, have gone down that route anyway. My dun setup by that i assume you mean dial up network also do no pick up the H e220 as a modem.

Have you tried what i suggested?

Or if you dont want to, try the upgrade on a normal machine running Windows XP.

No , DUN will not work, because for some strange reason, there is a secondary authentication on the vodacom network when ever you dial into their network. It captures the serial number of the SIM and links it to your dial up device.

As an example, I initially installed the drivers for option nozumi card..
then manually created a DUN, with correct APN and dialup *99*#

It still didn't work...

You must have done something wrong, I've manually created DUN connections for Huawei E620, E220 and Option Globetrotter cards and connected without problems.

You sure?

I (and many others) have been using DUN since day 1.

Or is this only on Server 2003?

Ok, so I don't need the VMC software to actually login to the network ?

I used Windows 2003 Enterprise edition...maybe this makes a difference.

Well, if i log onto the vodacom4me website, there's a history of all SIMs, IMEI's and the actual devices i used to connect to the vodacom network.
So, somewhere , some logging took place.

Perhaps VMC negotiates a better HSDPA ? link for you which a standard DUN doesn't...apart from setting the maximum bps rate

Also, when you install VMC, it asks you to enable reporting...even though i disabled it, it automatically wants to connect to a 196.x.x.x number..my firewall picked this up..

Obviously the network knows which SIM's, type of phone, etc. connected, so it keep a (often partial) list on 4me for your info.

VMC won't or rather can't negotiate a 'better HSDPA', it might manage the switch-over between 2G and 3G, if you're using a 'XG-preferred' profile.

I think the 'reporting' bit is just a link to 4me-lite.

VMC Lite

Hi all,

I have worked with the exact same problem of installing your E220 on Windows 2003 Server and got it to work with VMC Lite.

Firstly, you need to go to Windows' Services MMC and check that the startup type is on "Manual" for "Remote Access Connection Manager" and "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager". Also start the "Remote Access Connection Manager". (These services are disabled by Default for some installations of Windows 2003)

Then you must manually uninstall the CD-Rom driver and also the USB Mass Storage Device under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Do a scan for hardware changes after you have removed the devices.
