I have just installed Mobile Partner, in the hope of using USSD commands on my E303 dongle. I need to convert CellC airtime to data, and have no phone available to swap the card out to.

The web interface for the dongle still works fine, when I plug it in it opens a browser page, and when I go to http://192.168.1.1 it also works, but that interface has no facility for USSD.

Should I concentrate on getting Mobile Partner working, or rather find another way to send USSD with this modem? If the latter, can someone suggest another way please?

This device has probably got the HiLink interface and you can't use Mobile Partner with this.

You could try flashing non-HiLink firmware and Mobile Partner to the device but this is not without risk!!

There's a very long thread about this subject: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/507680-Huawei-HiLink-modems-(E303-E3131-etc-). Sadly, I don't think Cell C allow you to buy data via a web page...

You don't say where you are located but any PEP store will sell you a down market Nokia/Samsung for R119 or less. That's probably the easiest solution.

As you'll see it is possible to get USSD to work but on a temporary basis and it requires a reboot after getting into USSD (COM Port mode)

Thanks. I ended up following @ginggs's post here, to edit the Mobile Partner driver inf file, then put the modem into serial mode, then use MDMA to send the USSD commands. I sort of winged it, because instead of a menu for which bundle I wanted, I just saw gibberish, but the other menus were clear enough. It was tough going because in serial mode I had no Google!

Cell C is using different enconding method for each menu. Not consistent. ginggs decoded it manually in response to the same question. :) However there is version of Mobile Partner available for download supporting USSD. It has "USSD" and "SMS" in filename. If your version do not support USSD, search for these keywords http://www.dc-files.com
