Do these mifi devices use a lot of data in the background "on standby"?

Two weeks ago I set it up with a RAIN SIM and was satisfied with it, to be used as a backup. I even connected to it from my laptop and was surprised when I saw on the RAIN dashboard that I had only used a couple of Rands worth of data for the short testing period.

Yesterday was the first day that I used the device for an extended period. I was in PMB at the Royal Show, I switched the device on at about 10h30, put it into my backpack, and connected to it from my cellphone. I didn't have any background apps running except for WhatsApp. At about 14h00 when I couldn't send or receive Whatsapp messages, I checked the RAIN dashboard and saw that I had used up the R50 limit that I had set. (Damn good that I set such a low limit).

Since I had a password on the SSID and it was only my phone connected to it, I have to wonder. How much data do they use just on standby? It shouldn't be much except the little it takes to keep the connection alive.

Are there any settings that I need to change on the device?

On your phone data use screen, check how much data was transmitted in wifi.
Also remember R50 is only 1gb

It's an iPhone so I can't see those stats. You reckon it was some background process on the phone that used the data? I'm just surprised it used up that much so quickly when I closed all running apps. Only had whatsapp opened.

It's in the settings too, what your wifi usage is
