So I have had this lovely device for about 3 days and it has been great to use.
The Nova 5T is an interesting device from Huawei, slotting in somewhere between Mid-end and High-end, as it comes with some top notch features but not quite at P30 Pro level.
- 6.26inch 1080x2340 IPS LCD
- 3750mAh battery
- 22.5W Fast Wired Charging (50% in 30 mins)
- Kirin980 SoC
- 128GB storage (non-expandable)
- 8GB RAM
- Android 9 Pie with EMUI9.1
Quad Camera:
-48 MP, f/1.8, 28mm (wide), 1/2", 0.8µm, PDAF
-16 MP, f/2.2, 13mm (ultrawide), 1/3.1"
-2 MP, f/2.4, 27mm (wide), dedicated macro camera
-2 MP, f/2.4, depth sensor
Pros:
- Great Display
- Battery Life is more than enough
- Compact build with large display
- Fast Fingerprint Scanner
- Fantastic Camera, very versatile
Cons:
- No IP68 Protection
- No Stereo Speakers
- No Memory expansion
Day-to-day usage:
The Nova 5T has been great to use, weighing in at just 174g, with an aluminum and glass body, it’s not too lite but also not heavy, it feels solid in hand, and with it being shorter and thinner than the P30 Pro, it also feels compact in hand.
The UI is fast and fluid and due to this being an IPS LCD we don’t have Always On Display however we see the return of the almighty LED Notification Light, nice little supplement there, hidden in the top speaker grill.
You may also notice in the images below that the 5T forgoes a notch for a punchhole on the left side of the display, this is the first phone I’ve used for more than a few hours that has this setup and I must say I really like it. While watching YouTube, the punchhole is mostly out of the way of the subject and usually sits in areas that are not really important, as you can see in the below car review I was watching, this helps give a more immersive experience vs. the ol’ notch I have to say.
Security
The Nova 5T comes with the usual set of Huawei privacy and security features such as:
- App Lock (being able to lock apps with biometric security)
- Private Space (sandbox you can use to store private and sensitive data)
- Face Cognition (with front camera)
Etc....
However my favourite part has been the trusty Power Button that doubles as the Physical Fingerprint Scanner, to this day nothing beats the speed of a physical fingerprint scanner:
Battery Life
Has been nothing short of brilliant, I have only fully charged this phone once since getting it, it easily got through a full day of Instagram, FB Messenger, some photography and a whole lot of YouTube.
Overall, it gave me well over 24 hours usage and thanks to the 22.5W Supercharging, I was able to plug in when I got up for work and unplug at 100% before leaving the house over an hour later, absolutely brilliant.
Take note I had the device in Performance Mode
and still do

Camera
Huawei have become the Camera gurus over the last few years in the Smartphone realm and the Nova 5T continues the tradition. Its setup may not be up to the P30 Pro levels, however it's no slouch either, with incredible versatility and quality with every shot, it makes taking shots an absolute pleasure. Here are a few I have taken, the Ultra Wide angle lense is always appreciated, and comes in very handy.

Overall I have been thoroughly impressed with the Nova 5T, this is a great device for someone who does not need all the bells and whistles of an outright flagship but would love the power and some of the capability in a nice and compact package.
What do you think?
