so I have huawei mobile wifi router (r218h) which I have been trying to unlock so I use a universal firmware to allow myself to be able to use other networks other than vodacom. managed to download a telkom firmware from the site https://goo.gl/H1yfm3 and I keep getting error code: 10, find port failed! when I try to update/flush the firmware.

anyone got an idea how I can resolve this?

Technically it is not unlocking, but debranding.
What Huawei did say?

I had a similar problem. I think the software lock is done by Vodacom. I went to the Vodacom store and that's what they told me

Its a network lock.... I tried all other network sim cards in the Vodacom router and none was working

If a sim has a pin on it then put it into a phone to remove the pin from the sim otherwise the router wont be able to connect automatically and the light will stay flashing.

Also make sure the APN that the router has matches that of the APN for the network you are wanting to use.

No devices from Vodacom are network locked.

I wanted to buy a router from makro a few moths ago as it was quite cheap, didn't buy when they said it's network locked. So yes, they do restrict some devices to only their network.

I believe they are talking out of their arse. I have used different sims in Vodacom supplied modems and routers. Had no issue.

I'll see if I can find the add when I'm back by my pc, it was advertised as such.

I see others have the same problem. From my experience Vodacom devices are not network-locked, the same as Ockie said, but they modify firmware with defaults specific to Vodacom.

Check it out:

1. What is your default dialup profile?
2. In Huawei modems you cannot modify default dialup profile, but you can create a new one. To do that, put your own name, all entries empty except APN=internet. Save.
3. Make your new profile (your name) active, save settings.
4. If do not reconnect, restart or cycle power.
