Huawei working on PlayStation 5 competitor

Technology giant Huawei is planning an ambitious move into the console gaming market with the launch of a new system to rival the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Reports from China have claimed that the machine - tentatively dubbed the "MateStation" - could be released alongside Microsoft and Sony's next-generation consoles in that country.
 
Unlikely it will be taking on PS5 or XBox. HiSilicon is ARM based with Mali graphics which is a far cry from an AMD or Nvidia graphics chipset, so no devs would realistically port their PS5 and XBox games to MateStation to be on par with those consoles. This is more targeting high end Android gaming than what the average user considers console gaming.

Maybe if they partner with AMD for the graphics chipset and use SteamOS, they can get devs to build an ARM version of their game, but it is very unlikely.

Another possibility could be a Google Stadia type device.

Well it's a good thing if it lessens overall consumer demand on the ps5/xbox, higher availability.
 
They could do it hardware wise, but they need to do some serious marketing backflips for people to buy it.

Would Ubisoft or Epic or EA ever make games for it?

Could work. They just need to partner with tencent for the launch games and integrate with tiktok for socials on the console. Grow in China and then the world over.
 
Everyone was laughing at Huawei when they launched the P1, next thing they did was show Samsung how it's done.
 
getting developers onboard and building out new SDK's sounds fun

unless it's a Windows PC with a Huawei sticker slapped on

Do you think Valve just hands out Steam source code like that?

I think a.) CPU is probably ARM-based and b.) OS is probably Android-based with c.) a reskinned Huawei store as the main "store" app.

Don't forget that Huawei still has that Trumpian US ban on it, so no US tech!
I doubt they would re-develop a Linux-based OS for special use on this console
I highly doubt they'd be able to get x86 rights from Intel to make an x86 CPU just for a console

Can just imagine the ads - "Let's mate!"

"Want to go back to my place and mate?"

"I've put the kids to bed - let's use the MateStation!"

Also, will China decide what games I can play? Hopefully there will be a hotline built into the controller that will allow me to ask a member of the Chinese Communist Party for game tips and tricks, and also for advice if I am having counter revolutionary urges.

How are they going to make an x86-based system with the US ban in place?
Huawei already makes HiSilicon ARM-based CPUs
How are you going to run Steam on an ARM CPU?
What ARM games are going to show on an x86 shop?
How are they going to "modify Steam" without access to the source code?
