Huge SAA flight cancellations

My apologies, but I can't risk random cancellations in my flight schedules.

The unions act like a natural disaster. Which is one of the only valid reasons, along with militant threats such as terrorism, to cancel all flights to and from a national key point airport.

Any rule or reg that says otherwise is poorly considered.

Yeah, although I never used them before, I will surely never use them now. Who knows when the union members will go on strike again and leave me out of pocket scrambling to make new flight arrangements...

Or, worse still, you go to Walvis Bay (or some boondocks place), they go on strike, and you have no means of getting back home.

Technically they should, but the problem is - Air Nam need to be paid, and if SAA is broke, and cannot afford to buy you a ticket, what then?

Or they're too busy to strike to attend to their clients...

Of course you can do the booking yourself and try to claim it back, but if they don't reimburse you due to being bankrupt...

Nah, I'll stick to somebody else rather, thank you.

SAA has just suspended the Hong Kong route -- though, in my opinion, this is more to do with a reduction in demand owing to the political situation in Hong Kong (other airlines are also cutting back on Hong Kong) and less to do with SAA's own problems (though this is surely a contributing factor).

They cited the ongoing political situation as the cause.

That's inaccurate. Those are codeshare destinations. SAA fly to less than half on that list.

That's true -- hadn't had my morning coffee when I looked at the list the first time. (It was just Hong Kong that jumped out at me from the posted list initially).

One can find the current SAA international timetable here.

Came in expecting the limb with gangrene/flesh eating disease to have been amputated. Instead we are cleaning it with salt water. Success

You have to be more than a little thick to go and book a ticket on an airline which you know is on the brink of insolvency. Regardless of all the press releases about possible partnerships which frankly, are reeking of desperation, which should be raising serious alarm bells in anyone planning to fly.
