Hyundai's new quirky mini SUV. Right up Doug's territory./

New Hyundai Casper is a Quirky Small SUV

First images of the new Hyundai Casper have surfaced in the newcomers home market of South Korea and it looks quite quirky.

This is our first look at Hyundai’s new Casper small SUV which will slot in beneath the Venue compact family car in the firm’s lineup.

The new Hyundai Casper measures 3 595 mm long, 1 595 mm wide and 1 575 mm high and is built on the same platform that underpins the Grand i10 and Kia Picanto hatchback.

The new Casper shares some of its styling cues with the larger Venue but it wears distinctive circular headlights with its LED daytime running lights integrated into a darker strip just below the bonnet lip. The mesh-like grille further adds to the funky retro styling of the Casper.
Furthermore, the rear-end features an interesting light design incorporating LED triangles which form circular patterns of varying intensity that stretches across the width of the Casper.

As for the interior, we have yet to see an official image of the Casper’s interior but a supposed interior sketch leak does show a large dashboard-mounted touchscreen and a 2-spoke steering wheel. Official details and images are however expected to surface soon.

As for the engines that will power the new Hyundai Casper, a 56 kW entry-level 3-cylinder, naturally-aspirated 1.0-litre petrol engine is on the cards as well as a more powerful 74 kW, 1.0-litre pertol engine. Manual and automatic transmissions are also expected.

Will the new Hyundai Casper come to South Africa?

It’s too early to know for sure but there is a chance that the new Casper will see the light of day in South Africa. As a natural rival to the Suzuki Ignis, the new Casper should find favour with youthful buyers looking for a stylish urban city car. The new Casper is due to go into production in South Korea soon but it’s also expected to be produced in India which means there’s a chance that we could see an Indian-built Casper reach South Africa in months to come. We will keep you updated as this story develops.

Hyundai Casper revealed as friendly-looking mini SUV

As the mass migration to high-riding SUVs and crossovers continues unabated, car companies are trying to cater for this at every end of the price spectrum. The new Hyundai Casper is attempting to plug the entry-level gap for the Korean brand.

Although its name might create associations with a supposedly friendly animated apparition, it was actually inspired by the ‘Casper’ skateboarding flip, Hyundai says.

According to various reports, the Hyundai Casper shares its platform with the Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto, and it appears significantly smaller than the Hyundai Venue, which was the brand’s most compact SUV until now. No images of the interior have been released as yet.

Hyundai says it will offer two 1.0-litre petrol engine options, with the base engine being a normally aspirated MPI unit. Depending on the market in question, sportier variants will be offered with Hyundai’s 1.0T GDI direct injection turbopetrol engine.

Hyundai South Africa says it is looking at this new model with keen interest, and although it has yet to be officially confirmed for our market, the importer says it would make sense as an addition to the local line-up. As per Hyundai’s other compact models such as the Atos, Grand i10 and i20, it is likely that the new crossover would be sourced from India.

The Hyundai Casper is a very friendly crossover

Thought 'SUV' had already been distilled into the smallest box possible? An adorable Hyundai is here to prove you wrong

The crossovers never stop. Just when we thought ‘SUV’ had been distilled into its smallest possible size, along comes another dinkier, more urban-focused faux-by-four to prove us wrong.

But how could we be mad when it looks this ickle and cute? This is the Hyundai Casper, and never mind friendly ghosts; this is the friendly face of weeny crossovering.

There’s more than a hint of Suzuki Ignis about it from some angles, but that’s no bad thing at all. And the Casper has its own unique take on the ‘teeny tank’ look thanks to those huge circular lights up front. Naturally Hyundai couldn’t resist placing a white sheet over the car with those bulbs lit to give the Casper a ghoulish reveal online…

It joins the Hyundai Staria minivan and Hyundai Santa Cruz pick-up – as well as the European-market Tucson SUV and N-badged hot hatches – on a now implausibly long list of desirable Hyundais. Sure, the Korean brand’s ascent is no great shock anymore, but the simple fact we’re coveting a dinky SUV is proof its design department is on a roll and a half.

Based on the same platform as the Hyundai i10 city car, little 1.0- and 1.2-litre engines will drive its front wheels, and you can expect 100bhp or less from all of them. Which is fine in a car likely to weigh less than a tonne.

Let's Hear It For The Hyundai Casper, The Cutest Micro SUV You Can't Have

It's smaller and narrower than a Jimny, for the record.

That adorable bundle of form and function you see above is the Hyundai Casper, a tiny SUV the South Korean automaker quietly unveiled this morning. Details are sparse at the moment, but it seems as though the Casper is destined at least for South Korea and India. Certainly not the U.S., which is a shame for yours truly. Having now seen it, I want one in every color.

The Casper is small. How small? It’s 141.5 inches long and 62.7 inches wide, according to India’s Firstpost. For reference, the Suzuki Jimny measures 143.5 inches long and 64.7 inches wide. The Casper is about 8 inches too long and 5 inches too wide to qualify as a kei car, but in still images it may as well be one.

The Venue is the smallest crossover Hyundai’s willing to sell over here, and that car’s 20 inches longer than this one. But the faceless Venue doesn’t share the Casper’s cute-but-unamused-about-it exterior, or eye-catching grille and lighting design. The Casper is sort of like a less ugly Citroen Cactus that’s also been hit by a shrink ray, or a cross between a Fiat Panda Wild 4x4 and a Kia Soul.

Wow, actually like this a lot. Wonder though what percentage of drivers will be male, especially if it ever came to SA.

Is this smaller or bigger than the Duster? Or is this more Jimny size?
Seeing as it's potentially being pitched against other Indian contenders in the sub-4 metre category (Kwid, S-Presso & Punch), it looks like it's more in the Jimny class and definitely not a contender for the the Duster...
