I am impressed, Vodacom and MTN

In September, MyBroadband conducted mobile network drive tests in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo – which showed that South Africans enjoy world-class mobile networks.

What do the colours mean? Red = faster? Why are there more of these dots around the map?

Your test are always conducted in towns, cities and national roads, next time try villages and see how Vodacom trumps MTN with a very wide margin, there are people who also reside in villages that depend solely on Vodacom for connectivity

Try the Natal Midlands for real indication of signal..

That's wonderful. Now if only they could fix the multiple dead spots in Joburg residential areas.

Impressed with MTN? You kidding, right?

There is a lot more to an "impressive" mobile network than having coverage and a decent speed!

For me, MTN doesn't work at all most of the time, so it is "impressive" how incompetent and pathetic they are, this is the only impressive thing about them, have good infrastructure, and then have the most impressive team of utterly incompetent people, on all levels, from shops to upper management, whose competence is undervalued in the mere 50% drop in share price over the past 2 years!

Just to give you some hints, MTN is the only prepaid network in the world, which is NOT compatible with smart phones! Yes, this is correct! One cannot use data and make calls at the same time (CORE feature of any smart phone!), when on pre-paid, because all airtime is reserved for data the moment data connection is open, you can have hundreds of Rands, all reserved, just to prevent you from using your smart phone as intended!

MTN has no roaming in most countries around the world (including Europe), for pre-paid customers.

MTN is the only network that punishes their contract customers (on 2 year contracts) with up to 4 times higher per minute cost (up to R 3.00/minute), compared to their pre-paid customers (which are paying R 0.79/minute).

So if you travel overseas you have no roaming, if you are say in Johannesburg, and happen to use GPS or something that needs data connection then you have no voice service either. Only time you can use it is while in South Africa, at your home or office, so you are within wi-fi range and the mobile data is not being used, and only sufficiently long time after the last data connection was closed, so that the airtime gets unreserved. This, I was told by them, is normal behavior, and all funds are reserved, no matter what is your balance - you could be using R 1.00 worth of data, and have R 200 airtime, doesn't matter.

So, MyBroadband, how about you write an article to enlighten your readers how pathetic and unusable MTN is?

MTN, if you are reading, honestly, you are a joke, I used to pay you R 600 - 1000/month few years back, now I pay you maybe R 30/month, not every month, for the odd occasions when I am able to make a call on your pathetic network! My aim is to reduce this to 0/month, will only use your service to receive SMS, as this is the only thing that actually works on your pathetic network!

Last December we did a roadtrip to Cape Town from Bloem. Radio reception is not available for 90% of the route...I then started to stream my favourite radio station via MTN and we had reception for about 95% of the route : FM radio is dead!

What a load of BS.

And in Cullinan, a mere 15 km outside Pretoria I mostly struggle with either an Edge or very poor HDPA signal on the Vodacom network. The small arc that covers the diamond mine, the golf course and the small residential area in-between have the most awesome LTE signal (70mb+ speeds) but the majority of the residential area (including both schools) have almost next to nothing. And they are the best of the bunch by a country mile

Having been in the US recently and used T-Mobile. Had spotty reception and it was more expensive than local offerings.

What a load of BS.

I guess you are an MTN employee? Or a shareholder?

It is all facts, you can check them quite easily, so if you are referring to my opinion as BS, i.e. you think that it is perfectly normal and expected from an operator to not allow simultaneous use of voice and data, for example, then you are entitled to your opinion, so are all the incompetent MTN employees. Anybody with any degree of self respect will not be working for a pathetic company like this!

All I am pointing out here is that there is a LOT more to be considered before making a statement "I am impressed by ...", I cannot comment on Vodacom, but MTN is one truly pathetic company, they have demonstrated their utter incompetence to manage their network, their pricing makes sense only to those born with no brain (hint: their management), I cannot remember when was the last time when any of their staff has provided me with an adequate answer to a question - they either can't answer what you are asking them or provide you wrong information ...

The world will be a better place without MTN!
