i got my iMac!!

Geez, you didn't rock the boat u threw a spanner in the works! :-p

thealluseless has some points, especially on saving money by using Open office, the new version 3 is really cool.

I have a friend that wants to move over to Mac....

His biggest question is Office related... He always sends calendar notes to and from his clients/colleagues.

Will Mail.app support this or will he have to use Entourage? And will Calendar.app support his calendar items that he receives from his Windows clients?

fxit - Check you PM.

I've noticed that if someone sends me an Invitation/calendar event from Outlook to my Mac. I can import it and read it on my iCal. I can however cannot use it vise versa.

I would suggest using Entourage (Outlook for Mac) to get a seamless integration of Calendering between PC and MAC.

I highly recommend getting VMWare and using the windows partition strictly for Visual Basic...... I use Fusion and it's absolutely amazing!

Now the quick essentials as you asked for:

Nero - Toast Titanium

WinRAR - unRarX or StuffIt Expander. (unRarX is my personal favourite!)

Download Manager - iGetter or Speed Download (I prefer iGetter)

Can't think of any, but if you need give a shout and i'll tell you what I use...

iLife has everything else you'll need, iPhoto etc....

Wouldn't even bother getting Firefox as your browser, Safari is way better..

@fxit - I use Cyberduck to SSH into my iPhone....

Thanks limnos :) Is there no way to add an icon to the finder for the iPhone? (I know there used to be) Im sure avdp would also be interested in this :D

So basically if you have a Calendar item in iCal that you want to email to a Windows user, he won't be able to read it?

Just wanted to say congrats!

I also have one, but am in Vista most of the time cos I have to use Visual Basic to program :| So I can't really answer your questions unfortunately.

But I pop into Leopard every now and again and it's awesome!

I think from now on I am going to stay in OSX and boot into Vista only when I need to!

Enjoy it!

Thx fxit! Very chuffed! Sure Ill be bugging you for help!:)

I think its wise to bug me about the iPhone (if I don't say so myself :) ) , but not so wise (yet) when it comes to the Mac :p

As you can see, i'm quite a noob at this too :D

But, I'll help in any way I can :D

That doesn't make sense, cos you emailing FROM Entourage and not Mail.app...

If I tell him this he won't want to buy a Mac.... His whole job revolves around Calendar items with clients.. That's how he makes his appointments..

Ok, so well use this thread to gather info! :

sounds good to me :)

now you can decypt limnos' secret location :)

it reads "Location:   " in Windows, but in Mac, it shows something a bit more "healthier" :p I realsised this last night, while browsing the forums in Leopard

Limnos, then why doesn't he just use Entourage then? It has an integrated Calendar solution that works 100% with Windows ones.

Congrats,

Also if you want all your contacts moved over to your Mac just use your iPhone and iTunes, when prompted to replace info on the Mac choose 'merge' ;)

Ok, so I think I will stick with Office, as I have allready bought it, and need it for work.

I am allready confused with the whole xternal hd part. I have a ton of stuff on it, including my iTunes which is about 70gb. Can I connect it to the mac? Will it work? Can I possibly just backup to there, and connect it to the mac? Both are running at the same time right now, not for long, and both connect to the ADSL wifi router. Will any of that make it easier.

My first really dumb question. I know 0 about routers etc. Do I need to install the router's software on the mac? It is already setup through the pc, and the mac connected no problems. Obviously I would think I need to, in case I need to change anything in the future? But surely I wont have to change any settings on it for now????

AFAIK, as long as the removable hard drive is formatted as FAT32, it will work in Mac

You can format it using third party software in Windows if it isn't (as the limit in Windows is only 32GB), or simply plug it into the Mac, Go to Applications, Utilities, Disk Utility, and format the drive as FAT32 there (this has no size restriction like Windows does AFAIK) If you're gonna do this, make sure you get the right drive, and beware that all data currently on the removable drive will be lost when you format. So it might be wise to copy the stuff over to another drive / PC before you format, and transfer the data back after the format.

Can anyone confirm this?

With regards to the router, you simply connect via Wireless / Ethernet and enter the WEP key (if you have security enabled on wireless).
