Hi guys,

So it finally arrived.

I have set it up (booted up and done settings!)

It connected to my wifi no problem, so chuffed about that.

First question :
I am going to install office for Mac, and want to use the email program, which I guess is Entourage? Or should I use the std Mac mail program? How do I copy my emails from my PC to the Mac? I have an external hard drive, so I can back it up there, but how?

Thx:):)

Just wanted to say congrats!

I also have one, but am in Vista most of the time cos I have to use Visual Basic to program :| So I can't really answer your questions unfortunately.

But I pop into Leopard every now and again and it's awesome!

I think from now on I am going to stay in OSX and boot into Vista only when I need to!

Enjoy it!

Personally I prefer Mail.app (the Apple one) but then I've had so many hassles with Entourage it's probably tainted my opinion about newer versions. I also prefer Apples iWorks to Office anyway.

If you have an external drive make sure to format it to fat32 if you want both machines to read and write to it. :)

Doesnt VB run under Parallels or VMWare?

Congrats on the new iMac!

The best piece of software I have seen to transfer email from PC to Mac is a great application called O2M (Outlook to Mail)

http://www.littlemachines.com/

When it comes to what mail app you should use I think it boils down to personal preference. I use the Apple Mail app and I absolutely love it, wouldn't want to use anything else :p But I guess it's because I'm so Anti Microsoft :p

Bwana, just to add to that, instead of formating the drive in FAT32 for Windows and Mac to read/write would you not prefer to use something like Mac Drive and load it on the Windows side so it can read the Mac formatted Drive?

I mean FAT32 has some serious limitations in regards to file sizes...

The limitations arent that bad - how often do you write files that are above 4gb? If he's only using the drive to transfer the info from one machine to the other is it going to be worth paying for MacDrive?

He can always trial vmware or parallels and use that to read/write NTFS right?

If they're reasonably close why not network the two machines?

True, I guess I'm so used to telling the Video Post Production guys not to format in FAT32. If you just need it to trf small files then FAT32 would be great.

Networking the machines would obviously be the best and in some cases the easiest way to trf data from PC to Mac.

4GB usually only DVD's that are that big.

My one external drive is NTFS - use mostly for windows.
If I need to write to it from Leopard, I just wait till I'm in windows.

Other drive is the standard mac one, firewire - use it for time machine and movies/tv.

My windows partition is in FAT32.

Hmm thats an idea. I tried it out before and was rather impressed!

The only thing is that Bootcamp is much better for gaming apparrently. i.e. COD4 :p But i hear that's coming out for Mac too (or is already out)

Thanks for the suggestion though!

It is but you can share the bootcamp partition/installation of windows with Parallels and then just use bootcamp for gaming. :)

You can do it with Vmware Fusion as well. Basically you can have one installation of Windows through Bootcamp for your games and then setup Fusion/Parallels to use that same Bootcamp setup of Windows.

figured as much but I've only got a (dusty) copy of ||s so didnt know for sure.

Hmm how does this work exactly? Last time i used Parallels (a while ago) , i have to install Vista again. It didnt give me the option to use my existing Bootcamp parition.

Would it just run Windows from the Bootcamp Windows partition without rebooting?

Would the performance be exactly the same? Because last time i tried, Parallels didn't have as much hardware support as Bootcamp has (like graphics drivers etc) and the games ran much slower.

Thanks for the help!

Also, since I am also considering permanantly moving over to Leopard, could you perhaps give me and avdp you list of "essential" apps? Such as the Winrar of Windows / Nero etc

Thanks a lot!

Its one of parallels more recent features - you basically tell it to use the bootcamp copy of windows and it then runs inside osx.

The performance might not be as good as running windows natively - especially for graphics - but its often very close.

Nice! And do you know if they have fixed the performance issues? (Not just with regards to gaming)

Edit: ah thanks! I thought so.

As stated, O2M is the best one to use for Outlook to Mac Mail conversion.

Rather use Mac Mail, the MS support for Office for Mac in SA is really bad. My clients moan about Entourage and MS support quite often.

The other negative about Entourage is that it creates a DB file of all the mails and it's a bit slower than Mac Mail. Mac Mail also integrates easily into Calendar, and Address book, not so with Entourage.

You'll also get more help on these forums with Mac Mail. :)

Well basically both Parallels and Fusion have the ability upon setup of the virtual machine to use Bootcamp as the Windows Installation. It does take a little bit longer to start Windows because the way it does it is by un-mounting the Bootcamp Partition and that does take about a minute or so. I believe this feature is only avaialbe in Parallels
version 3+

Another really really cool feature I love is Fusion's Unity Mode, Paralells has one called Coherence. Basically it Hides the GUI of Windows so that when you are opening programs and browsing in your Windows Explorer it will do it on the Mac Desktop, whats great is that it gives you the feeling that you are not even running Windows. The Start Menu gets added to the top menu bar as one of the options.

I prefer Fusion as it has some pretty cool graphics perks over Parallels. For gaming I would still use Bootcamp tho...

On the Windows side I would strongly recommend an Anti Virus, something like Avast!, it's free and does the job pretty well.

Not sure - why not download a trial and see?

Ok.. Just looked on their website at the latest version demo and all I can say is wow! They have come a LONG way since I last used them!

That integration/coherence mode is amazing! Gonna download a trial ASAP :)

Thanks guys :D

p.s. sorry avdp for borrowing your thread :o

Time to rock the boat i guess,
i have never had great joy pointing my parallels or fusion towards my bootcamp partition. It seems to give me rubbish and i end up redoing it anyways. If it works for u great, i always recommend to NOT do this.

O2m is great, but why not use thunderbird? its free, it converts ur mail, and mac mail can import directly form a thunderbird database file? With the $ rate, save what u can.

Again another difference of opinion, i prefer entourage, i find mac mail slow to read/download messages, it times out faster on slower connections, and it cant exchange. Entourage is also buggy, but i also like the fact it has DB files, easy to transfer/backup. I have also seen very corrupt mac mail situations, which is easier to fix on entourage.

But....instead of buying office, try using the new version of open office. its pretty good

I would format the drive hfs+, and use macdrive on windows if possible, when snow leopard is out, its easier to convert hfs+ to zfs.
