Firstly, let me apologise if this is in the wrong forum? if thats the case mods please move to the relevant one.

I've just about had enough of this sorry excuse for a service provider.

I've had a contract with them for the past 12 years, and it's been nothing but grief. I've gone through getting my number de-activated for no good reason, my voicemail deleted for no good reason, my roaming dasabled without any requests from me, my ability to call international numbers removed all of a sudden, as well as a maximum billing amount put in that I never requested. Well this was all in the past, with the one instance (voice mailbox) which took well over a month to resolve, and only after I personally had to go to MTN HQ and raise hell with the manager of technical.

Well, in 2004 I requested a dual sim as my then BMW had an in-car phone. Car was sold in 2005, and I IMMEDIATELY called in to MTN call centre (spawn of satan) to get it suspended with immediate effect. I always kept the dual card with me.

Now fast forward to 2008. Since about 3 weeks back, i started receiving voicemail messages for a MRS Nkabinde. I thought nothing of it, probably Mrs Nkabinde gave out a wrong number. But lately this became a daily occurrence, and more suspiciously so the fact that the calls never came into my phone, but rather I would get a voicemail message sms.

Today i finally had enough and called the people that are chasing after Mrs Nkabinde, turns out it's people whom she owes money. So I kindly requested the number that they are dialling and it's getting through on my voicemail.

Turns out it's an 083280xxxx number that i've never heard before. Company also confirms that this number was used succesfully in the past to raise Mrs Nkabinde?

So i called the spawn of satan call centre and put in a complaint. Once I gave the utterly idiotic woman the 083280 cell number she tells me that "but sir, that is your dual sim number"

Huuuuuuuuuuuh? Firstly, my dual sim number always worked on my number, not the 083280 1, but she explains that the secondary sim needs to have a separate number where the call is then forwarded if the primary phone is off and blah blah. fair enough.

But why oh why was my dual card not cancelled back in 2005? "Sorry sir, we have no records of requests to de-activate the dual card thus you have no recourse"

Obviously I didn't keep the slip of paper with a refernece number from 3 years back, so now I have no recourse whatsoever on the matter. More disturbingly so, how the heck was this Mrs Nkabinde reachable on what turns out to be my dual sim card number?

I feel in a murderous mood today. And MTN is unwilling to help.

Yep, I feel your pain. I tried unsuccessfully for two years to get 16202 to work for my contract phone. In the end, I just cancelled the contract.

O... Try to port... 3 months of NO SERVICE!!

Now it is to get that paid money out of them for no service delivery... hahahaha...
Got to love these “service providers" in SA!

To share in a bit of the MTN hate, I've just gotten my MTN statement today and miraculously my 2GB Bundle has been replaced by a "HSC CORP+ - MTN50TU" which costs R2000 ex Vat. Had similar billing nonsense with MTN earlier this year and they're utterly useless when trying to fix it.

MTN, either fix your billing system, or fix your customer service. But don't sit with both broken.

Edit: Looking on hellopeter I see a couple of other people have had this same problem, and they already brought it to MTNs attention a couple of weeks ago. I would think that a well run company would go "Wow, some people are suddenly having their R400 bundles turn into R2000 ones. Perhaps we should figure out the root cause of this strange situation and fix all the people affected, rather than waiting for them to individual call us and bitch."

Surely it can't be rocket science to do a global compare of contract customers current subscribed services, and match it to last month subscribed services, to find everyone involved.

Offcourse its not Rocket Science its just pure and utter lazyness and ignorance and the consumer ends up having to suffer.

The service sector is just getting worse and it's across the board... Sad thing is whenever we get average service we impressed cause all we used to these days is crap!!!

This might come as a shock to some but I have been getting consistently good service from.... wait for it.... TELKOM for the best part of the last 11 years. I kid you not... Hope I haven't jinxed the great run I been having with them but it has been!!!!

Prepaid FTW!!! :D

But it is sad to hear of the issues people are experiencing - one would thought that having a contract gives you better service?

It's utterly nuts hey? On prepaid you get a billing system that works and is instant, you can make international calls without paying a R2000 deposit and signing a whole bunch of forms, and now with prepaid price plans like MTN Zone you can often get better rates than contract people.

It's almost like they've given up trying to sell contract packages to individuals and are just using them to target businesses, where one would want to see an itemised bill at the end of the month to check for personal calls.
