I have a very strange pc problem

My money's on the power supply......

I had a very old P4 that would run fans and hard drives etc, but no green power light and no post.

Would have to unplug and replug and/or switch on/off. Eventually it would not boot at all.

A week's bed rest and a new power supply and all was sorted.

I DONT REALLY WANT TO spend money on a power supply now, afaik the power supply is the oldest hardware in my tower.everything is less than a year old.

Like i said it only happens when the ac goes off..

I'm starting to suspect a PSU problem, personally... Have you tested with a different PSU? Annex a friend's PSU :D

i checked Google and went to different forums, but it seems that there are different views out there.
Will only be able to get a psu at the end of the month.i mean i dont have R600 bucks to throw around:eek:

Your PSU is too weak to turn on the whole of your PC.

A 300W PSU can be used on your PC if bought brand new... after 6months you'll experience some problems, as the capacitors and transistors in teh PSU begins to fail (too much power to drain, and crap quality) - give it 2 years, and your PSU just had enough.

When you buy a new PSU, dont go and buy a 350W just because its JUST ENOUGH. Rather go the extra mile, and buy at least a 650W PSU + good quality. This will in the long run save you extra money, as you only need to upgrade the psu evey two years or so - if the pc doesnt demand more.

There is a nice Power Supply WATT Requirements website, where you fill in all your hardware details, like CPU, RAM, How many HDD's, SATA, GFX card, etc... and in the end the website calculates what PSU is needed. Do a google search - i lost the link

Cheers

In my case it was def not the PSU. Either mobo or CPU.

btw mine was also a gigabyte. This time I bought solid cap. ASUS.:D

Also a strange pc

My pc after 4 years started becoming really fussy. Never liked it in my tower when it was standing upright so i had to either leave the tower lying on its side or take everything out and lay it on the carpet in order for it to work. I did however fix this in the end....

...SOLUTION: Took it to the backyard where nature provided me with a variety of "tools" neadless to say ye ole faithfull 4 pounder was the top favourite.

i can remember everything but all this use to be fine until last year december when this started to happen.
SOmetimes i noticed that bios just suddenly loaded default settings ,maybe th e root is a cmos battery but i doubt it.

this problem only occurs when the mains are turned off due to eskom or by myself.

I would start by checking/replacing the cheapest component - the CMOS battery. If still persists, re-flash the BIOS (with the same BIOS version you currently have), set everything to default, reboot, go back into BIOS, then set manually. If you have an AGP GPU card, set it in the BIOS - if an onboard GPU card, set it accordingly.

I had some major issues a few months back, and decided not to re-install the OS, but instead, uninstalled ALL my hardware drivers, then re-installed them from scratch - really helped.

Check your motherboard drivers and reinstall if needed.

If you have a spare blank HDD, unplug all other drives and install OS from scratch, with the GPU drivers and see if this helps.

If all this fails, then start looking at PSU / GPU / Motherboard, etc... 300w does seem a bit low, and I would recommend a 450w or higher -- I know it's not the best make, but I have two 450w aOpen PSU's that were fairly inexpensive, and have not let me down yet...very reliable and decent power.

With all the Eskom spikes and cuts, you MUST get yourself a UPS - I would rather shell out R150 to replace a UPS battery every 3rd month, than have to keep replacing expensive PC components...

If you suspect the motherboard is the problem, then take it through to Rectron, where they can test it and replace immediately if still under the 3-year warranty.

Identifying the problem by trial and error should be done with the least cost in my opinion... :)
