I lost my job.

If you cannot make ends meet without the job for the next couple months, family, bonds, loans etc .............. dont put yourself in a jam because of the company sillyness ................ take them to the CCMA and cover yourself.

If not and you are young without many overheads, take it on the chin and move forward. You will look back at this as a great learning experience for both work and personal growth.

Either way stay positive and move forward, once you mentally put this past you things will start to look much brighter again.

Good luck!

Look at it as a chance for a fresh start, still sucks though :(

I have been in the position of your ops manager. Downsizing is hell. IT was one of the hardest times I had to go through in my life.
I ended up resigning when the task was done.

So I'm working a late shift and our operations manager phones me 15 minutes before we close, 'hey, can I buy you a drink after work?' I ask him if x person can come with, also an employee. He says no, I want to talk to you alone. I got pretty nervous, not knowing what to expect. We meet up at a pub and he buys me a drink and gives me a shot of tequila.

He tells me he has bad news, the company is letting me and some others go at the end of January-Early Feb. I sat there shocked, could not look him in the eyes and I tried my best to fight back the tears, they did well up though and a tear ran down my cheek despite trying so hard not to. I sat like this for about 3 minutes, not saying anything. Not knowing what to say.

He asks me, how pissed off are you right now? I say not at all, it's still sinking in. Then I asked him who the others are that are being let go, they all worked there about 3-4 months max. Me? I worked there for 14. I asked him why, he said there's just too much staff.

This was all such a shock to me, since my friend resigned a week earlier, so I asked him who is going to replace him? He says no one and that they are using the staff they have more.

So we say our goodbyes and I put on a strong face, but as soon as I stop to leave and drive home the tears just couldn't be held back anymore. It's such a horrible feeling and I honestly would not wish it on my worst enemy.

I'm so angry, I did a lot for the company. It's not like the company is not making money, just two of our 10 stores in one center make about 1.4 million a month and that's just two stores. I did so much more than just retail work, I did admin, worked about 4 months with more than 220 hours - maxing 236 once, which is actually illegal I'm told. But I didn't care, I thought if I did the hard yards it would pay off in the end.

I don't know what to do. I'm angry, I feel like setting up a meeting and murdering my boss just to show that just because they are in power does not make them God. Maybe not kill, just disfigure her face so she has something to remind her of me every time she looks in the mirror. Something that'll last as long as my distaste about this entire situation.

But, that's just foolish talk that'll never leave the corridors of my mind.

Eish Sorry to hear this buddy :(

Im not too familar with labour law, but im prety sure they cant just fire you, they have to folow proper retrenchemnt procedures and will have to offer you a severence package of some sorts to tide you through.
I woudnt go the CCMA route just yet if they folow procedure maybe try and get your self clued up on the law or speak to a labour lawyer / specialist so you know whats right and wrong. Dont burn bridges unless they arent folowing the law.

I guess its time to update your CV and start sending it out, dont dismay this happens sometimes unfortunatly - maybe for the better you never know

Regardless, just meet your goals... no guarantee not being retrenched. Meet the standards expected, no need to exert yourself unless it guarantees a reward.

Thanks, I sleep a lot easier, knowing there are people with that attitude and hence if it comes down to it, chances are that I will not be let go :)

Dude, go to CCMA. The way this was handled is so wrong you're going to smile all the way to the bank. Our Labour laws are some of the most stringent in the world (for good and bad), but as an employee you are so protected by law. Get all your facts and as much info as possible. Maybe join a union like soladarity, they will sort your employer out chop-chop.
Life is tough now get tough and fight back...

Good advice but you need to fight your employer as well. If they fire you due to downsizing a severence package of 1 week pay for every year worked is standard. The fact that they bypassed all the procedures will cost them dearly, you'll get more.

Did he offer you a decent severence package? You can claim UIF now, it's not a lot but it'll help, and if you're a hard worker you'll be fine again...

He can only claim UIF if they do not get him to sign a resignation letter.

OP. They must fire/retrench you. Do not let them convince you that resigning is better for you.

A slight update, I sent out CV's everywhere, probably about 15 places. It was embarrassing at first because everyone judged me that I spoke to. The online CV's I sent out got 0 replies.

Got a very lucrative offer at Glocell, working at the busy branches you can rack up about R8k in commission and a record there is apparently 15k commission wow.

I thought my appearance (long hair for a guy) would work to my downfall, but not really. Most places are pretty casual and my 13 months of experience did me well. Got an offer at another Vetshop as well.

But I opted to study this year instead.

Going through Northlink, a 2 year course in Sport Fitness - very excited. Finalizing my registration tomorrow because their system was offline today (SA education system >.>)

I feel a lot better, I was very depressed. Maybe I'll meet some hot gym chicks fuaaark yeah!

Also worked my backside off the whole year and got no bonus !!!! Shyt... forgot... I work for myself.....

SWAG, sorry to hear, know the feeling, went through it twice. All the best in finding a new venture.
