I love it!

Windows is fine, using a different operating system is no different than the car you drive. of course it's nice that it's free , that it's easy to install and that it has so much support and gadgets, but i've encountered enough problems with Ubuntu to make me miss Windows occasionally.

if you don't game; there is really no reason why you should run windows. work issues aside.

So, if you don't use it for work, and you don't use if for Gaming - wtf DO you use it for? Surfing?

I'm sorry, I don't get why linux should be better than windows 7 - especially not when most of the Software I run is for Windows, or Mac at LEAST.

I installed Ubuntu and couldn't even browse my hard drives

Nah, not for me thanks - Windows 7 is fast and reliable

If all you need to do is run a browser and play mp3's, then yes, I guess linux will do the job fine though.

Insecurity? Only one rated thread on the Linux front page, apart from a sticky, and I put the rating down to you.

Tr...

I managed to screw up my Ubuntu install last week (own fault entirely) so thought, what the hell - let's try Mint (it's built on Ubuntu so all the repositories ard apps are available) - and it really is a more polished Ubuntu - it did a better job recognising my FrankenDell (wifi card, etc) and looks very slick and professional.

For windows switchers it put the apps into a familiar place (start menu and menu) and for Ubuntiates it's easy enough to add the buntu menu on top.

Recommended - thanks OP - you led me towards Mint in the first instance.

Ive got my mom and wife on default installs of Ubuntu and they dont seem to be having the same problems as you do.

You just need to click on "Places" instead of "Computer"

Theres that, and much.. .I recon that the people who run the top 500 super computers in the world use them for more than just browsing and playing mp3s.

Lol, just imagine how fast you would be able to encode those Mp3's!

My view is like this: Think of how many people buy computers because they need to access internet, email and do business orientated tasks like spreadsheets, word processing, etc. These people will probably never play a game that can't run on linux anyway. Now think of how much money Microsoft is making off these poor suckers. Why do they need a M$ product?

Linux is just getting better and better, was so surprised actually when I plugged in my 3g data card and I could use a wizard to set up my 3g connection! I can't even use the thing in my Windows 7 install because there are no drivers for 64 bit!

I also think that the majority of computer users out there still have this misconception regarding linux, thinking we still use cli for everything. Damn my linux desktop looks way better than any windows desktop and is 150 times more functional.

Don't blame me for getting in to a rant, lol. I have to use Windows at work everyday - and it really gets to me. Microsoft releases updates that bring our whole office's exchange server down, clever bastards.

Over and out.
