I Love Linux

But I'm glad I have experimented with Myth, as long as you follow the official guides you can't go wrong. I've set a custom Ivtv playback profile and using the retro theme, absolutely love it :D

Thanks for the KPPP link but that's not what I'm looking for... maybe it's not KPPP that I'm using but the KNetworkManager.

a few months ago i re-installed my 32bit OS with a 64bit one. it took months to get mythtv working flawlessly again. i'm still having trouble with my webcam and motion (detection).

moral of the story, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Damn you were right, mythtv just wont start now, I tried to change the recording directory again and after that it wont start... I tried everything and now it's totally broke :(

How do I attempt a full mythtv reset to default settings?

make sure the user has access to the dir.

settings are stored in the settings table. you can always go in there and undo your changes.

try to launch mythtv from a terminal so that you can see the error message.

If you install it on linux friendly hardware it just works :)

Edit:
The Sudo linux support thread.

I have to agree ... I use a MacBook and my recently resurrected PC is now happier than it ever was now that its running Ubuntu ... just like my MAC my PC works ... it works.

I've decided to do a clean install rather, I'll be honest I messed around with system services before I changed the recording directory so I could have broke something along the way. :o

something which i keep on telling myself to do but never do is to write down what changes i make during a session. i tend to do a whole lot of changes and reboot at a later point.

How do I create a script to run a terminal command?

I want to run "pon internet account" and create another script "poff internet account"

Easy.
1. Create a new document (no extension).
2. Put your commands in the document, separated by a line break
eg:
""""""""""""""""""
pon intl
pon local
""""""""""""""""""
3.right click file, go to properties and then permissions
4. select/enable run as application. When you click on it, it will ask you "run in terminal/display".

Thanks, I'll try this out later

No luck. I'm using kubuntu btw.

edit:
Figured it out myself, just added "#!/bin/sh" and my terminal command and it worked.

I'm running Ubuntu, but there shouldn't be a problem. PM The_Librarian and ask him. He should be able to tell you then.

I sorted it out already.

I just can't get XMLTV to work with Mythtv, anyone got it working and would like to post instructions for SA users?

http://download.flash.za.org/schedule/
This seems to be the place to get the schedule. Can either download all, or selected channels.

Thanks I checked out that site but the channels seem outdated, no BBC knowledge etc. the schedules are up to date though :)

I followed this sites instruction to fill the database
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/South_Africa_MUG

Ran this command in terminal:
mythfilldatabase --file 1 ZA-XMLTV.xml

then I messed around in the channel editor and got it working :)

Yesterday I was having a hard time getting my NTFS drive to mount at startup and /etc/fstab editing was not working then I discovered that KDE gives you a GUI to to this under disk and filesystems and I was able to set my permissions correctly :)

If only I had known this it would have saved me a lot of time, "experts" overlook these simple fixes.

LMFAO :D
Just got a BSOD running XP SP3 in virtualbox... so funny watching XP crash in a window while the rest of my PC runs fine. :D

What's really fun is seeing Windows crash on a plane.... was flying to London a few years back and got a BSOD saying "Press CTRL+ALT_DEL to restart"... all I did was watch a movie.... :D

^LOL

No screenie, was a critical failure and just rebooted immediately.
