I need a fixed IP

Hi guys - please help

I want a fixed IP so i can run a simple website from my office. I do not want dynds as I a a co.za domain name.

I know I need a Cisco router but were can I source one and how many millions does that cost.

Any help and advice will be appreciated.

Set your existing router into "bridged-mode", then create a dial-up style ADSL connection on your pc using a program called RASPPPOE, then you can specify your own IP no prob...

(Upside of using dial-up type connections : Your ISP account info isn't stored on your modem anymore, so it's safe(r) against hackers,
Downside : Your modem's "hardware firewall" is bypassed, so you'll have to use a software firewall - like the Windows built-in firewall)

Think this should do the trick??? (But I'm no expert....)

You can't just specify a static IP for yourself! What happens if the IP gets assigned to another user?

You can get by with dyndns with a co.za domain on a dynamic IP though. Just ask your DNS provider to create a CNAME (alias) record under your domain pointing to your dyndns.org address.

i.e.

www.mydomain.co.za will alias to mydomain.dyndns.org

Then set up port forwarding on your router to your webserver. I've set up lots of these and it actually works quite well.
 
Thx Frag but I already use RASPPPOE.

I want a fixed IP address but do not want a commercial offering as I do not want unlimited bandwith etc.

My 348k line is fine with my 3 gig cap, I want to host my website from my Windows PC using a co.za domain name.

I concur - it works very well. Managed to get the whole thing running for free end-to-end using www.za.net and xname as the NS with dyndns.org for dynamic dns :-D sounds complicated but as long as you set up the CNAME part correctly it works lekker. I'm even running a mail server with MX record. All free on ADSL - who needs static IP :-)
 
Ok guys domain setup on server in the US. It is working ok now must I edit the zonefile and edit the www - CNAME part or should I change something like the AAA eish??

Or should it done at co.za's side locally.


I am using WHM/Controlpanel

Any help please.
 
The DNS for the co.za domains needs to have a CNAME record pointing to the dynamic A record (www.domain.com). Have you checked that the dynamic part is working? You should get that part running first. Whoever is hosting your co.za domain's DNS should be able to create the record for you.

too blooody right!! Oh and why dont we just choose our own Car registration numbers while we at it, oh and credit card numbers as well!!
 
hehe choose a random IP...

you will need to go to a ISP that will give you a static IP

Also if your going to be running IIS I hope your going to secure/lock it down otherwise you will be hacked in seconds :)
