I am looking for a phone that can give me a good internet browsing experience. Currently I have a Nokia 5310 XpressMusic with Opera Mini and browsing is a pain/awkward. Not too mention the small screen, images not loading and pages refreshing instead of loading with Opera Mini

Can you guys recommend a phone with a biggish screen and good browsing functionality for under R4k?

The only option is an iPhone. It's the best when it comes to web browsing.

You can find quite a few iPhone 3G 8Gb for around R4000 in the classifieds/bidorbuy.

No an iPhone is not the best for web browsing, its the best for being over priced.
hungrybeaver try look around at one of the HTC Android devices.

I had an iPhone previously. I'll have a look through bidorbuy - is it safe to buy from the sellers? How does the AppStore work in SA - can we access it and get Apps?

yea I've been checking the Android devices out. Legend and Desire look the best - but the cost must be pretty high?

There is a South African app store but it doesn't have the variety or quality of the US store.

Nokia N900, with firefox and full flash. Your next bet would be to go for an android based phone such as the Htc hero or upcoming desire.

Blackberry.

For web browsing? I find the browser on my Bold 2 to be not great, have to ZOOM in to be able to see anything, and then you are scrolling left and right just to read a news article. Also, the blackberry gets "unstable" when viewing large sites, like the MyBB news section.

Apparently RIM are going to release a new webkit browser, saw a video of it on Youtube and it looked great...but who knows when that will come?

Very happy with the browser on my hero (android). Should be even better on the desire, because of the higher res screen.

iPhone. I got mine in Junkmail. Check out Bidorbuy, gumtree classifieds as well. Should be fine as long as the deal doesn't seem to dodgy. It's brilliant. You can access the US App store.

A 3GS is even better but they usually go for around R5k. If you can get one do it since it has more RAM and a faster CPU.

Android is almost as good as iPhone for browsing.

Here's a 16gb iPhone 3G going for R3200

you want a good internet experience? why iphone if half the websites you go to you cant view coz you dont have flash?

HTC HD2

4.3" touch screen phone. Amazing performance. And they are the only phones that will support FLASH, yes... FLASH.

Dont let anyone tell you that an iphone is best for browsing.

HD2 is more than R4k. And Flash sucks on any phone, show me a demo of any phone running any Flash content decently.

Wait for the HTC Desire. Blazing fast snapdragon processor makes browsing super fast. Large AMOLED screen is beautiful and crisp. And it has Flash , I think, which the iPhone will never get.

I have the Nexus One which you have to order from the US (it'll cost you around R6000 tax and shipping included) which is pretty much the same hardware and browsing is fantastic. Even the Nexus One will get a Flash update soon. Definitely look at a more recent Android phone.

Switch to column view, you're using page view which is generally useless. The webkit OS will arrive for Blackberry with OS6 at the end of this year (perhaps earlier).
If price is a concern then you should go for a Blackberry, if not then Android appears to be quite good.
