I need a tripod

Christmas shopping took on a whole new meaning for you... :D

Hehe. Most definitely.

Unfortunately I am somebody who likes to do a lot of research before buying something. So this might take a while.

I've only replaced the TV and my router so far.

Tripod status…

… still for sissies. :p

So come now. I'm looking forward to what you're gonna come up with.

Yeah me too, i saw a D3 advertised for 15k the other day - thought he might have been looking at that for its 9fps

You guys are so impatient :p

Haha.

No but seriously. So many of the suppliers are closed this time of the year that you struggle to find all the stuff.

I'll be spending a good hour or so at Outdoorphoto when they reopen on Friday. Will play with all the available tripod and ball head options and make a decision from there.

I'm also very much considering to bite the bullet and get myself the 70-200mm F2.8 I've always wanted.

Now's the time to really expand your horizons and switch…

I won't lie. I've considered it.

If i do go this route... Suggestions? Something on par with the D7100?

Not sure what you shoot but I like the look of the 6D for portraits and landscapes - 5Dmk3 might be out of your price range but I wouldn't mind one as a backup for my 1Dx. Otherwise if you're not keen on fullframe the 70D is supposedly pretty good. Of course there's the venerable 7D. I've actually developed a second love of that camera for cricket.

Interestingly enough, not at all. It would fit between the 6D and 7D.

That was the best I could come up with too. Both bodies have obvious strengths and weaknesses.

Over the course of the last weekend I came to the somewhat reassuring conclusion that no matter what, when it comes to NR, I cannot do it nearly as well as my camera. Truth be told I'm finding less and less justification to shoot RAW any longer. :o

Buuuuump :D

Apoc how was that Hahnel 40 tripod of yours..? I see you initially liked it. It looks pretty decent for a cheapish tripod.

Here I am!

That Hahnel was nice for me. It did what I wanted it to do but I am looking at getting into landscapes a bit more and I will admit that the Hahnel is not rock solid in windy conditions. Very slight camera movements will spoil the photos at low shutter speeds. Apart from that I loved it.

I only found out later that the Hahnel had a hook at the bottom of the centre column and that it can be used to hang a weight or sandbag from. That would probably have made it a bit better for windy conditions. Too late now though.

If you are really interested in one, let me know. My brother has exactly the same and I believe he wants to sell it. He used it to mount his spotting scope for rifle shooting.

I can of course organise it from him so that you can test it out as well like OGroteKoning did.

My tripod issue remains though.

I managed to pick up a SLIK PRO700 tripod for free from a friend. Unfortunately the head is completely buggered and also the reason he gave it to me for free.

It is a very very nice set of legs and I can't see it moving even in very windy conditions.

2 problems.

1. It is very heavy and I can easily see myself getting irritated by carrying it around.
2. Ball heads cost as much, if not more, than a complete tripod set.

I had a look at getting the same ball head as on OGroteKoning's Benro tripod but the head alone is R2400 while you can pick up the complete tripod kit for R2600.

I'm basically back to square one. :(

The invitation still stands!
