Hi

I need my internet to always work and cant afford to be disconnected while gaming. The problem is that it will sometimes disconnect for 30 secs or more. This usually happens on a windy day or when there are monkeys on the line. If my line goes down I want the backup connection to work within a second or 2. Is the possible? I was thinking of getting the telkom internet 3g modem and 200mb data for R399 for the year once off. http://www.telkommobile.co.za/internet-starter-pack/ . How can i get it to switch to the backup connection automatically as soon as there's a problem with the ADSL line?

I have a 2mb Adsl line and 10GB account from Telkom and am using a Netgear DGN2200Mv2 router.

I think no matter how quickly the backup comes online, if you are busy playing and get dc'd for even a second, the game will kick you out. Also switching from ADSL connection to 3G (or any switching between different connections) you will get assigned a new IP address and most games won't like that either. Path of Exile for example, every time I log in with a different IP (after switching ADSL accounts) they send me an email with a code that I have to enter before they let you log in. Quickly logging in from different IP addresses might also trigger a warning for account theft or similar, depending on the game.

any form of wireless internet will fail you. if you're so passionate about your gaming, get ADSL. If your area doesn't support ADSL, move. that's the only way your hardcore gaming habit can be sustained. Otherwise, maybe consider casual gaming

Well, you'd likely need to use a Gaming VPN service that is tolerant of disconnections. I speak under correction but I remember WTFast allowing me to stay online even when switching connections. THis was with different ISPs though so your mileage may vary
Also determining if you are actually offline or just having latency issues is difficult. At best you could set up a proxy gateway to test pings for instance and if it reaches a certain threshold ( 1sec+ ) initiate the 2nd connection or fail over to it. If the IP you are testing against has issues this will also trigger the switch though

You're basically looking for enterprise-grade hardware to solve a consumer-grade problem. You're going to have to pay big bucks for it to work as you'd like. So yes, there are solutions out there, but it just isn't worth the investment. This is the stuff used by banks, corporates and data centers.

Banks have assigned static IP addresses. On dynamic IP I don't know solution other that escaping to the external gaming VPN service.

The simplest approach would be if game server would allow two simultaneous connections from the same user. In such situation slightly better than consumer grade - Mikrotik router by example would solve problem.

Thanks for the info guys. I will get a 3g usb and connect it my router and test. The game server reconnects me after a few secs when I switch adsl accounts.
