I need my data recovered...

Ok I think I might as well then buy that program.

Your prices are im guessing extremely high!
R1650 to recover a HDD...

I disagree, you are not guarantied to get the data back if you buy that other software. And R1650 for a hard drive is very reasonably priced. I had to get quotes a while back to recover a drive and I couldn't find anything cheaper than R3000 for a hard drive. they also have a guaranty no recovery no cost.

That's actually pretty cheap. You are risking losing 25% of your life's work and you're too cheap to spend R900, never mind R1650? Your life's work must not be very impressive if it's worth that little to you. Also, this is a somewhat interactive and very time consuming process. Say it takes them 4 hours to get everything back that's R400/hour for a specialist. Pretty cheap as well.

Disagree, I doubt you would find anyone cheaper. Phone some other data recovery companies and see what they charge, just sit down first before you phone them ;)

If I help people out that I know (I don't do this for a business/living) with logical hdd issues I would charge a bit less and you will have to wait till I have time so no next day service or any of that stuff. I also want a spare drive from you beforehand. If it's not a logical issue I can fix I will get you a quote from a data recovery company and that's when most people cry :D

If you know what you are doing you should be able to recover your own files BUT if you don't then you stand a pretty good chance of losing even more data.

If the data isn't worth R1650 to you, then DIY is your only option. Also, you learn something in the process (apart from being more careful in future). If you desperately want the data, rather get a professional to get it back and learn to DIY in your own time for future if you have the time.

I was recently quoted a figure of around R15k to recover my 3TB hard-drive...

Way off the mark. That price is very competitive, and for SouthBits service, I'd say extremely reasonable.

Tip: Once you've spent the very reasonable almost absurdly cheap R1700 to recover your data, spend another R3K to get decent storage for multiple backups. Depending on your data, two backups on different devices is the absolute minimum. I always have at least 4 backups of everything. This might sound like overkill, until That Day arrives, as it almost surely will...

Self Face-Palm!!!

Dammit!
I thought it would be cheaper than that.

@south bit Can you recover .NEF files?
I dont care about all the other crap on the drive I just want my RAW images back.

Stuart - download recovery softs from MacUpdate: Data Rescue, File Salvage, Disk Drill and Disk Warrior

I have heard great things about Disk Drill. Each of these will tell you what you CAN recover if you register the soft. Going price on any of these is US$100. Trust no others, especially anything MacKeeper or Stellar Phoenix related. Download, see if the will recover. If they will, then you are on your way to success without using a third party.

I use all the above with varying degrees of success - accidentally formatted drives are usually pretty straight forward to recover.

Whatever recovery software you chose, the thing you must remember if you are going your own route:
a. Clone the drive and recover from the clone. If you make mistakes, you can always go back.
b. Stop using the drive in MAC OS or Windows. Mount it read-only under Linux.
c. For cloning boot the application from CD or USB.

I'm gonna take some liberty on his behalf and say yes but each case is different and depending on what you have done to date results might vary but I'm pretty sure he would get all your files back for you unless some were overwritten in what you have done.

Very good advice. I would never mount a drive in in any OS i need to recover from except linux and in read only mode. First thing is to always make a image and then work on the image.

Why bother with testing software they may work or may not, when they have quoted you what is indeed a fair price, less than R2K for something that you say is important is good value.
Plus what can you get for R2K these days anyhow, and maybe they will recover lost porn files you didn't even remember deleting?

Kiddy porn?

Hey some people have some weird shyte on their hard drives they don't want others seeing.

So here's a question to the recovery experts. What do you do if you find something illegal (like child porn) on that hard drive? What are the implications for you if you do nothing and an employee reports you for doing nothing?

Generally you don't open clients files, maybe one or two here and there just to test. If a file has a obvious name that's suspicious I dunno, do you look or leave it be?

Client's data is dealt with in strict confidence, sometimes they require a NDA. Some people are under the impression that a recovery company may trawl through client data during the process. This is certainly not the case (speaking for SouthBit) for many reasons.

Client's data is confidential and that fact is respected. Also, think about dealing with terabytes worth of data every week. 'My Documents' is seen merely as another folder that needs to be recovered, more work to get through, more time, more space. Apart from respecting client's privacy, it is actually of no interest. It's work that needs to be done, the goal is to restore the client's data and move onto the next job.

Obviously there are validity and consistency checks in place to verify the recovered data, but this does not require the viewing of any user data. At times the client may request that we verify, by means of opening, certain critical files, but this is as far as it goes.

If something obviously illegal appears in 'plain sight' (child porn for example), then it is obligatory to report it to the SAPS, but this situation has thankfully never arisen.
