I need some help please guys.

I have decided that I am moving from Telkom to a mobile internet such as 3G but I have been hearing alot of bad comments about 3G.

Any advice about my choice will be welcomed.

Thank you

In all honesty, you made the right choice... but on the wrong time. Welcome to the world of HSDPA and the MyBroadband Forum :)

Why doesn't that sound good?

It really seems like i'm in for some kind of battle.

I have been hearing alot of neg comments about 3G and the speed. I wanted to know if it was just a speed problem or infact a connection problem?

Thanks for your time.

Vodacom is busy with upgrades at the moment, so the negative comments you've been hearing is of those who are temporarily affected by the upgrades(and making a mountain out of a molehill for nothing).

Vodacom 3G/HSDPA is awesome. Go for it.

Is it really worth the cost. I saw 1 package offer I'm not sure but said something like 3G one gig for something like R366.00 per month.

What would you suggest to start off with?

Once again thank for your time.

Oh yes, before I forget, how mobile is it.

I am planning a trip overseas to the US(Oregon) soon, will it work over there.

No, the USA uses a different frequency for HSDPA, but you might be able to get EDGE on some GSM networks, but best to wait for v3g to comment.

Sorry, got to disagree with this. There have been major problems, but they are being fixed. This is not a case of being 'temporarily affected by upgrades', nor is it making a mountain out of a molehill. There have been serious problems. Fortunately, Vodacom is taking the problems seriously, and many fixes have been put in place already; more are coming, so it's unlikely to be as big a problem in the future.

Yep I agree with you there, was rather surprised when I read Iam3G's post last night, there is light at the end of the tunnel, but let's not forget that the tunnel has been plunged into darkness quite often over the last few weeks - quite serious problems & enough to drive any customer crazy.

@Garth.H, my advice is that you consider buying an HSDPA modem outright [e.g. on your credit card's budget] and shop around & compare modem prices, then use [searchforum]PPDB[/searchforum]s from either Vodacom or MTN or both.

No denying the tunnel was pretty dark a few weeks ago, but there was a distinct linear increase in light, i.e. we saw constant incremental improvements. This is especially true if you measure the total network performance.

What muddles the above picture is when a new, different problem is introduced at a specific (say regional) level. For the people in that region, it seems nothing has been done or that things have gone backwards.

The 'page cannot be displayed' problem in the Midrand area, on the internet apn is a good example. It affected a small enough number of users not to trigger the monitoring alarms, but when it was reported here we had the guys look and resolve it before 12 last night.

Then i guess i wasnt experiencing "serious" problems with my HSDPA, just when the upgrades took place. Everything is stable for me now, at work and at home.

And i always look at the bright side of things, so i did see that faint light at the tunnel, which is why was patient with Vodacom. The occasional frustration here and there, but they came through and thats what counts!

Thanks guys. I feel somewhat assured. The level at which it is discussed seems astronomical. I will look at alternatives.

Still have a question about the US roaming though?

+- 6 weeks Mountain or molehill, temporary ???. If you running a business Mountain (Table Mountain) feels like permanent. Carefull how you comment.

Still have a question about the US roaming though?

My son toured the states last year and found the following:
- Generally 2 networks that you can roam on using Vodacom - Cingular and T-Mobile
- Really only GPRS available - 3G is on a different frequency band
- Not possible for non-US citizens to get a prepaid sim - unless you can get a local to get it for you (Tim got a local phone from relatives)
- Stick to GPRS anyway - it is a lot more expensive than here - paid about R5 per 100k. Something to note here - it was billed in 100k blocks i.e. 0-100k = R5, 101-200k = R10 etc, so it would have turned out a lot cheaper if he had remained connected for longer periods ie 5 nearly consecutive 2k sessions cost R25.
- Scrutinize your billing with a fine tooth comb afterwards - for a period of about 5 days the billing went up to R1250/Mb (from the average of about R50/Mb) - almost had a heart attack. I had a major fight with the Nashua Mobile guy who insisted that rates are high over there! (I suppose a comb with one tooth would have picked this up, but Nashua couldn't see it!) Finally got him to lodge the query with Vodacom - turned out it was a billing glitch from the US side!

Hope this helps.....

@Zax..Thanks for the help man.....I really appreciate it...I think I will consider what is offered over there and if there are any alternatives.....I think what I'll consider some pre-paid offer here and then look at other options......Can't afford to pay for a contract over here while I travel abroad. Thanks once again.
