I would go 3rd gen if I was in your boat.

Not worth it to repair, they will probably charge you half if not more of the purchase price to replace the screen. Its sad but we have moved past the repair view when it comes to tech in this throw away society.

Thanks. I'm in no rush, the iPad still functions 100% so I'll wait until I go to the UK in June and take it to Apple and see what they say. Apple employees can, at their discretion, repair things free of charge if you play your cards right.

It gets worse.

I have an upgrade in August, and I may consider an iPhone too ... one Apple ID, iCloud, Photostream etc may make life a little easier

Thats even better, if you can get to a official Apple store. But I suspect broken glass will require a charge, but you never know you might get lucky.

Lucky for me I will be getting a 3rd get at US pricing. Got a friend coming to SA during easter, same women that got me iPad 2 last year so I'll be getting mine dirt cheap with no import duties :)

I'm tempted to get my kid, the one who dropped it, to hand it over to them and say sorry. :)

Then again I might just buy a new one in the uk and claim the 17% vat back when we leave.

Retina Display: 90% of what I use an iPad for involves text, not pictures. Reading it, writing it. I can read my iPad 1 perfectly well. I am not an artist or a gamer.

Processor: Yes, nice, very nice. Most of that extra horsepower is used to drive the new screen though, so it's a zero-sum game in the end.

Camera: No flasher. OK for taking pictures on the beach (which is where Apple cunningly shot their promo film), but you'll still be carrying something else for nighttime or inside photos. For rugged outdoursmen types only, then.

LTE: Yeah, right, And our cellcos will introduce 4g to South Africa right about when the rest of the world is about to move on to 5g. And probably do it on a frequency that is incompatible with anybody else on the planet. Little-known fact: before we can get 4g, we need to move on to all-digital TV to clear the analog frequencies, and you know how many times THAT has been postponed. LTE is not even relevant to Europe, so how you can call it a plus in a South African context baffles me.

What was I hoping for in the new iPad? Storage. I regard it as scandalous that they stuck to 64 GB as the maximum. I wanted 128 or 256. Heck no, I need 128 or 256. I want a Terabyte iPad :). Don't give me the "keep it in the cloud" bulldust. If I am in a motel room in Koekenaap, I want my data with me, not on a server in South Dakota. And repeated calls to download the same data from da clowd over and over again only enriches the cellcos.

So, if I can save a few thousand on an iPad 2, I have to give it serious consideration. For what I want to use it for, the iPad 2 will give me the exact same functionality.

I haven't made up my mind yet. The new one will give me a degree of future-proofing as developers slowly start to abandon the 1024x768 format in about 2 years or so. The fact that Apple kept their prices steady is a plus point. Whether Core will do the same is an open question, of course.

Crisp text is where the retina display really shines. It means text looks magazine like, instead of slightly jaggy. It would be foolish to not pony up fort he 3rd gen if you do a lot of reading.

Atleast hold one in your hand before deciding.

Tough call. By the time the 3rd gen arrives in SA, the old stock will have cleared. Though there will be plenty on bidorbuy.

But just out of interest, have you? Held it in your hand, I mean? Do tell.

The ipad 2 isnt going away anytime soon, it's still part of the product line at a reduced price. It would make sense to wait for some hands on time before committing because you might find the retina display worth the extra cash. It seems to me you are dismissing it too quickly.

Use it, don't use it. :)

It's a lot clearer whats in store for the iPhone 5 now, 1gb ram, 4" screen, A5X processor, LTE and perhaps a redesign. Software we will have to wait and see...

The bigger screen will make a major difference. That's one area the iphone lags way behind top android phones.

Bombs, reasonable on contract though.

I'm paying R599 a month for a 32gb 4s which includes 240 anytime minutes, 100smes and 500mb of data...

EDIT: Also consider that a year old 32gb 4s could easily sell for around R4k-R4.5k...

In the US, yes, and only the 16GB model :( If I'm unhappy about 64 GB, then 16 will barely feed the guppies, won't it?

The, whether Core will keep bringing them in ... well, I've learned not to put serious money on Core doing anything right.

The iPad2 will still be available in many/most/all countries after the launch of the gen3 iPad. It's on every country site I've seen that is launching this week.

Also, as far as I can tell Apple hasn't actually increased the iPad prices so you'll get the gen3 for the same cost as the ipad2 was at it's launch.
