I know i have posted this previously but i'm looking to sell my PC and buy a new futureproof system.
Must get everything from scratch:

i3/i5/965BE CPU?
DDR3 1333/1600 and how much for running win 7 stable and games + odd writing of dvd's converting movies?
MOBO WRT cpu?
DVD writer
HDD (500 gig is more than enough)
screen?
PSU?
and finally quote on 5850.....let say i have 6k max 7k.........

5850 - +- R3000
So assuming you have R4000 left in your budget, you want seven components ( each costing at the very least R500 except for the dvd writer ) for that?

Intel lga1156 i5 750 - Quad core , 2.66ghz box cpu , 3.2ghz turbo R2022.86 (inc VAT)
Intel "Tom Cove" H55TC LGA1156 Dual-Channel DDR3 R1038.38 (inc VAT)
Corsair VS2GB1333D3 VALUESELECT 2GB DDR3-1333 1.6v CL9 R619.91 (inc VAT) *2
Western Digital Caviar GP WD5000AADS 500GB SATA2 7200rpm R492.55 (inc VAT)
Samsung SH-S223 , 22x , Sata , Oem pack , black , super-multi R209.24 (inc VAT)
Coolermaster RS-500-PCAR eXtreme power 500w, ATX 12V V2.01 R561.43 (inc VAT)

The above is all directly from Prophecy.co.za

Club 3D 5850 1GB ATI Radeon HD5850 GPU - R2875.08 including VAT from Landmarkpc.co.za

Aand I think that's the budget gone?

Total for all that: R8438.64

( I went for the cheapest that I'd reasonably actually buy, anything less and you'll end up with a [more] crippled system. )

My advice is to look at a cheaper GPU - A high end card in a budget system is going to throw your price out.

You could save R400 by getting a Phenom 955 from rebeltech I think. Maybe also get 2gb RAM this month, and fill it up next month??

Intel has just in this week released their plans for the future.

Basically it comes down to a new chipset being launched around Q3 2011.
They want to incorporate more features onto the CPU itself and move away from the current trend of eg: On-board graphics being handled by the chipset- to the CPU (like in i5 6xx series CPUs).

This will mean that they will also have to launch a new socket, which will render 1156 and 1366 useless. (They'll need more pins to accommodate for instance on-CPU sound controllers)

So unless if "futureproof" for you means past Q3 2011, get an AM3 - AMD will launch its 6-core CPU's on there, and hopefully they'll stay longer than 1156 and 1366 will.

AMD has already launched its 6 cores on the AM3 platform (linky). Availability should be within the next month or so. And yes, LGA1366 is to be replaced by LGA2011 in 2011, Q3.

Got alot of people asking about builds the last few days. Seems people have some money to spend, oh yeah!

Everyone has money except me sigh:(
I will say wait awhile until amd six core is out then make a decision am sure a lot of cpu prizes is going to drop when it's out.But if you in a real hurry to get a new build up and running I5 would prob be the best performance wise.

r9k is a bit too tight if you need a monitor as well. Look this is about what I can recommend if you want to future proof to any reasonable degree:

Do you need SLI/Xfire support? If not you can get a reasonably cheap P55 board these days:
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?products_id=41209 r1100
If you do need then maybe this is a good choice:
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=81_593&products_id=40097 - r1400

So..
Mobo - r1100
i5 750 - r2000
5850 - r3000 give or take
1tb - r750
CM690 - r800
P2350 - r2000
CM Extreme 650 - r880
2x2gb ddr3 1333 kingston ram - r1000
dvd-rw - r250

If you had the will, you could buy rather 1 5770 1gb now with an xfire board - then save for a 2nd in a few months. Otherwise this is going to be about the low end of a really decent future proofed gaming PC rig.

i7 is the only way to go if you want future-proofing...

Justify? One liners are not very useful to anyone. Intel has already said its going to replace LGA1366 in Q3 2011, whereas AMD has a firm history of trying to keep CPU's backward compatible if possible. The AMD route sounds alot more future proof to me.

I can wait untill end of may then I can have about 11k

I say buy whatever your money can buy at the time, there will always be something in line waiting to be released... :P

Then wait till May, you wont regret it. Just dont get stuck in the "waiting for the next big thing" loop, cause that will never end ;)

OK I'll wait. The rest of the e-tailers around SA (conrad, ratwiz, etc.etc)can quote me with budget of 11k on complete system that you feel is futureproof enough and decent enough for gaming if you please......thanx:D

i5 isnt the one to get for gaming. if you plan on running two gpus the two 8x lanes that is allowed on i5 isnt enough for something more powerful than a gtx275.

AMD is the way to go. Next month the six cores will be available.

Ya go amd dude. For gaming it seems the logical choice.

six cores?

No i dunno about 6 cores man, i doubt even console ports will use 6 cores but for 1k or so you can get a really decent amd for cheap with many feaures lacking on cheap intel boards and for gaming the 965 will be as good as it's intel counterpart.
