iBurst considers WiMax options

It would be a huge shame to see iBurst pissing away its WiMax options.

Don't see the benefit to the end user? Hmm. I, as an end user, would see a small speed increase from 1mb/s to 100mb/s as a benefit. Just a thought.

Keep in mind iBurst: Just because slow internet is the norm in SA it does not mean that we as end users do not want more speed.

And it would be a huge pity of ppl went over to the beast that is telscum because iBurst feels that WiMax to the end user has no value. :(

I don't think it helps that WiMAX can go to 100mb/s right now. that is probably what they mean. ADSL could go to 24mb, does that mean it just happens?

Theres NO way iBurst could afford to give everyone 100mb for a long time.. They are talking of upgrading each basestation to 100mb, how would they ever even give 10mb to each user in SA?

but of course, its a good investment and gives a lot of benefits over iBurst, so why they dont just change over is puzzling, its a huge advantage for them. But they already have so many basestations, Wimax would mean starting all over..

but really when I read the title i thought great, we can get WiMax...

no way, iburst technology is as different from WIMAX if you like as GSM is to CDMA. You can't upgrade anything. You can simply leverage your existing towers and sites but other than that no magical upgrade of any kind. Also what you need to realise is that the 100 Mb/s promised by WIMAX is actually total base station capacity. The marketing machines at Intel punts this as though it means each user gets 100 Mbps. This is insane as they confuse journalists who end up writing users will get 100 Mbps. The base station capacity is limited at some point and everyone has to share that so you can give 1 Mbps to 100 users or 100 Mbps to 1 user. The Wimax gang and unsuspecting journalist obviously punts the 100 Mbps option as it sounds nicer! iBurst currnetly supports 24 Mbps on the downlink and 8 Mbps on the uplink meaning 20 subscribers can enjoy 1 Mbps if they were hammering the link simultaneously requiring speeds of at least 1 Mbps. But because of multiplexing and the dynamic nature of iBurst in terms of resource allocation and bursty nature of IP applications, you can still offer 1 Mbps up to 80 - 100 beyond which it starts to gradually decline until the upper software configured limit of each base station (currently 648 users).

once again this sound fine and dandy, i still say better value for money bigger cap and more speed for less money?

Wimax for backhaul, giving you 100 Mbps from baseStation's to "cenral station"

However, if they are limited going out from "central station" to the Internet Cores, you still have a bottleneck.

Now a Iburst/NeoTel Tie-up could be interesting come April 2007.

Ahh, so they say they are planning on upgrading their own iBurst base stations to 100mb. So this would be using the WiMax as backhaul.

And then we would hopefully get alto fewer backhaul failures to, as those seem to be the main reason for detestation outages.

Sounds great, now they need to get implementing.

What are the odds of Telkom, Neotel & Sentech (& any else that can scrounge a license) NOT deploying WiMAX somewhere in the future?

If so, thats 1 proprietary provider vs. potentially 3+ national providers using standardised CPE equipment. To me its no contest ... the outcome is pretty inevitable.

Remeber TEIKOM is the problem, as long as telkom exist, no matter what technology you use, you still pay through your nose to use broadband here.

Ah, but the telscum monopoly on the sat3 cable expires april 2007. Then NeoTel can start selling bandwidth at lower prices. (We all hope, at least)

The Telkom-SAT3 exclusivity agreement expires next year, but that does not mean Neotel will have access. The issue will probably be on who owns the landing stations, i.e. those cables connecting the SA network to the SAT3 cable. There is currently 2, one at Melkbosstrand in Western Cape and another at Mtuzini on KZN north coast. I am pretty sure that Telkom will state these landing stations infrastructure is their property, and those who want access to SAT3 (and have rights to it), will have to pay their "toll fees". But, if govt can make these open access and operate on a non-profit level, then there could be a reduction in price. But I doubt this will happen. The incumbent will probably have to build their own landing stations, but Telkom will probably not accept that. We will probably just have to wait and see.

Ekhaatvensters , using Wimax as a backhaul will not offer any superior performance than just using Microwave. Most Microwave kits these days support 100 Mbps and are already being used by iBurst but i think Mtshali might be attracted by the fact that Wimax backhaul will be cheaper and will not require line of sight as is the case with Microwave which mostly works on higher frequencies like 10 GHz - 15 GHz. These frequencies can not penetrate obstacles easily unlike say a WIMAX base station operating at 3.5 GHz. But don't expect any miracles regarding performance from Wimax backhauled network. Maybe it may just get more reliable as the 3.5 GHz is licensed only to iBurst, NeoTel, Telkom and Sentech.
