iBurst launches ADSL, HSDPA

iBurst stated that they were going to become a network agnostic provider of fixed and wireless broadband services and their announcement that they will now resell ADSL and HSDPA services falls in line with their future plans.

I don't see this as something negative but rather a positive change for the local ADSL market. In my opinion, iBurst is one of Telkom's major competitors with regard to the services offered, and this could force Telkom to adjust their retail ADSL and voice pricing in the near future. iBurst's pricing favours quite competitively if one compares it to Telkom Internet and Mweb. Since they both share a relatively large proportion of the ADSL market share, iBurst launching ADSL services at lower rates should concern them and force them to adjust their prices. I also like the fact that iBurst will roll over unused bandwidth to the following month's cap. Whilst Axxess, Webafrica and other ISPs do offer data rollover on pre-paid accounts, iBurst mentions that they will have this on all accounts, monthly or on 24 month contract.

We can only hope that Telkom Internet and other ISPs will come along with similar or improved products, such as what Mweb has recently done with the free local bandwidth campaign.

The question I have - is iBurst realising the limitations of their own technology? Until the commercial launch of their Wimax service, the current iBurst technology has very little growth potential, especially compared to HSDPA and ADSL.

And furthermore, iBurst and Vodacom is becoming so integrated in their service offerings, why dont they just simply merge the data services of both? Or am I dof here: does Vodacom think their is value in the iBurst brand?
 
"Network agnostic"? As in "network without knowledge"? Well, we can't argue with them there! :D

So you're saying its better for the consumer to pay R2000+ for 10GB
of data on HSDPA/3G vs R999 on iBurst?

Dude there's no way that this is good news, apart from them offering an ADSL product. Those prices are ridiculously on par with the likes of Mweb! R29 per gig local, R89 per gig shaped?

Their prices only compete with other ISPs if you take out a 24 month contract with them. If you look around, others charge you iBust's contract rates without trying to tie you into a contract. And take it from most people here, being tied into a contract with iBust is not a very pleasant experience.
 
There is a lot I would like to post about this - that is basically what I have previously posted many many times, however people will make their own decisions, so the empirical advice I will give - in support of what Highflyer_GP posted, is never to sign any lengthy contracts - look past the temptation of a free modem and whatever other carrot on a stick is dangled in front of you.

PS: iBurst SA's Accounts Department is staffed by incompetent demons that will pillage your bank account.

Hell yeah to that!
My sister has iBurst, for over a year now, and since she signed up, they never charged her for the modem, never once debited her account for the monthly subscription...they have no idea what is going on there....!:confused: CLUELESS!!!

iBurst SA is probably debiting some other poor schmuck's bank account with your sister's subscription fee.
 
All of iBurst's ADSL bandwdith is more expensive than the R69/70 per gig you can buy prepaid. Only one month data rollover? On prepaid you can use the bandwidth at anytime in the future...

Okay, so maybe the comparison looks better against Telkom or Mweb. But does iBurst offer free local bandwidth after capping as Telkom and Mweb do?

Telkom was "experimenting" with free local bandwidth after capping, however, Telkom has started charging for local bandwidth after the cap (article around here somewhere)

Mweb are going the same route.

Telkom charges any wholesale ISP for local bandwidth used by it's userbase... It'd be business suicide for the ISP's to give it away free no?

come on since when was local free? it was never free no matter which way you want to slice it.

Telkom Internet reserve the right to charge you after you have used up the free local bandwdith on their accounts. So on a 3gig account, you get 30 gigs local only. If you use more than that they will start charging you. If I bought the local only portion from Axxess (which is the cheapest) it would cost me an extra R300pm.

The article says that iBurst ADSL pricing is more favourable than Telkom Internet or MWeb. But does iBurst offer a free local only portion?

We should compare apples with apples.
 
Does the hub still exists on iBurst? And what speeds can one pull of it?
