Hi guys

I am not certain if everybody knows about the questions related to ICASA’s invitation for comments… The document can be downloaded from: http://www.icasa.org.za/Repository/resources/Whats%20New/Ministerial%20determinations_Discussion_Doc_FINAL_%202004-10-12.doc

It will be great of you guys can comment on some of these questions, which I will then compile and fax to them as an official MyADSL response… It might even be of value to send your individual comments as a MyADSL member. I think in this case it might just be of more value to send 2000 individual answers than send one fax indicating that it has the backing of 2000 members [:D]

Quite right, RPM - as PEAPOD advised earlier in a posting somewhere, the likelihood of being listened to is that much greater when a flood of submissions is received, as opposed to a single response representative of X number of persons.

Come to think of it, I think it would not be misplaced to specifically invite certain members of this forum to respond individually, considering their levels of expertise and experience. I think you should send an email invite to such individual members, specifically for this purpose, explaining that suitable response would not only further the aims of this forum, but also promote societal development at large. Besides the obvious ones (I think you know who you are, folks!), I'm thinking here specifically of Phillipa, who has tons of experience dealing with politico-types.

Be all that as it may, I'm certainly going to devote some time this weekend to formulating suitable input for the 'colloqium' (an archaic term if there ever was one!)...

Good day

I am a little worried by the narrow range of the questions. I hope the impact of the Feb 1st 2005 deregulation cuts a bit deeper than what they are seemingly hinting to in this document. I am especially keen on seeing the introduction of 24/7 connection offerings on all (not just some) connectivity methods in our country. Flatrated internet access is a must if we are to create new opportunities for business and knowledge distribution in South Africa.

Thanks for the notice RPM, I will send my thoughts through ASAP.

Regards
Antowan

### What we need in South Africa is cheap 24/7, always on Internet for under R300 a month. ###

I've started reading through the study that the minister of communications based her new policy on and it makes for some interesting reading, the propose some fairly sweeping changes to current legislation in order to bring SA up to spec in terms of teleco's.

RPM I definitely with you on the "many submissions is better than one" idea. I think MaD should encourage his Hellkom readers to submit their own sets of responses, in order to flood ICASA with responses.

Maybe then they'll wake up to the reality that South Africans really do want change in telecoms.

yáll have probably seen it but if anyone wants some simple reading on the legal effect of the liberalisation announcement there is a good discussion document issued by Lisa Thornton Incorporated attorneys - very good in the telecomms law area

was part of a recent newsletter but have not been able to find it online - if interested i would suggest sending an e-mail to Lisa ([email protected]) requesting a copy - weekly update issued 1 October 2004 (not a bad idea to get on the mailing list for the newsletter while you are at it)
