ICASA gets tough on wireless nets

I'm all for rolling out WiFi all over the country.

Tell me, does anyone know if there is a decent WISP operating in the Dbn area?

Telkom needs a leash, ICASA needs some guts, and the SA consumer needs to make it happen
But when ICASA is a ass it needs it`s guts removed and only put back in for the fight against
Telkom

Google is so smart,I typed in Hellkom and guess what google said

Don`t you mean.....<insert evil laugh>
TELKOM!

I still cant believe this. why is icasa going after ppl trying to get this country out of the pig nest? yes WISP's are there to make money. these are ppl that with a relatively capital investment can make a good product but because of our Bondage laws with telkom companies have to pay telkom to take a dump.

why cant they go after the lawmakers? Challenge the fscking gov and say "look our telecoms market cant grow with the unnatural relation we have with telkom".

anybody opposing gov in this regard and icasa has my utter an foolish support

Proud South african rip offs.

I have two words for ICASA: Fsck you

I'm in the prccess of setting up a local non-profit wifi network.

This is all academic anyway when technologies like Wimax (2005+) make it possible for Joe Average PC users to turn on their PCs and have a 2KM omni range with a R300 wifi card, mesh networking will become an instant reality. Whatever any ****** gov dept or commision thinks.

Aerosat and Uninet, you have my support.

Take on Icasa, and keep up the good work.

My sig is in the context that ICASA needs get some guts in fighting Telkom. It doesn't take guts to simply enforce the law...as their wifi clampdown suggests they go after the easy prey, but lack the guts to put Telkom in its place.

As regards Uninet the Financial mail has been contacted and they will be doing a follow-up piece giving Uninet's side of the story - i.e. Uninet does have a VANS licence and is operating lawfully (despite ongoing harassment from ICASA) - look out for an interview with David Jarvis of Uninet

It would seem that ICASA have a special place in their hearts for Uninet - searches, seizures and criminal charges....all after granting them a VANS licence in the first place

ICASA are perfectly good at kicking their own backsides...given the laws which they are mandated to oversee they really do not have a hope in hell of doing anything right - witness the bloody nose which Aerosat have given them in PE (congrats NRV!)

it looks like we may have a period of relative calm as everyone tries to get to grips with the so-called big-bang....so-called because first of all it is nothing but a reflection of the realities on the ground and secondly because, when dealing withn the department of communications it is best to not count chickens before they hatch

we shall see

They might as well leave it as it's legal from Feb. and rather focus on Telkom which is where the REAL problem lies.

probably - although we should wait and see what February brings

the matter remains relevant to Uninet insofar as an allegation that they do not have a VANS licence is (a) simply wrong and (b) would mean they would be unable to take advantage of the liberalisation because it largely applies to VANS licence holders...this may affect their client base negatively

as regards telkom - this is probably not the accepted line in the forum but they behave as a typical capitalist corporate and we should not expect anyhting different form them either now or at any time in the future; the problem is fair and square with the department of communications and the many vested interests which government has in the success of telkom and the mobile networks (and others). it is the government which has set out the rules under which SA business and consumers get screwed and only changes in government policy will make any difference. It does seem that govt is slowly realising just how badly its policy is hurting the national economy and is at odds with its objectives in terms of the digital divide and universal access

sure telkom will reap the consequences of their short-term outlook in the near future but do not expect the fox to love the chickens when the farmer has given it the keys to the henhouse...

hope that makes sense

Has anyone thought of actually phoning ICASA to find out what wireless nets they think are illegal?

The reason I ask is because if they refuse to say then you can send them a letter telling them that if they close down the service you are using (you don't need to specify which one) then you expect ICASA to refund you the cost of the equipment purchases you made to get connected, and you will take Mr Langa to the Small Claims Court.

One letter may not do anything, but 20 letters might, especially when people start asking for his ID number and residential address [}:)]

No (yet) an expert on this but -

if operating in the ISM band a wifi operator does not require a licence but (a) all equipment must be type-approved by ICASA and (b) there remains the issue of carrying a signal over a public road or division + (c) the bandwidth must be sourced from telkom or whoever else has a PSTN licence

as ICASA and Telkom (and given that there are a lot of exTelkom staffers populating ICASA they do tend to speak with one voice)interpret the law this means that all wireless operators providing access to customers not on the premises are acting illegaly

there are some wireless operators holding VANS licences but ICASA still argue that they are contravening (b) and (c)

my personal view is that (b) does not need to be complied with by a wireless operator that has a VANS licence and (c) is a difficult question of degree - where does the PSTN leave off and the VANS begin? there is no specificity in the law in this regard

this has not yet come before a court so it is difficult to predict what the outcome would be but basically in the eyes of ICASA all wireless operators outside of hotspots are illegal

also, from personal experience you are better off waiting for the tooth fairy to come visiting than waiting for a reply from ICASA

Wireless is the future. Pity about Sentech. Uninet service, reliability and speed is great. I do not think they have the capacity for a large fast roll-out.

UniNet may supprise you Rex. They have opened a branch and national call center in PE, and are opening a branch in NorthWest Province, Durban, and a few other cities/towns are under investigation.

By next year they plan to roll out a national/international VoIP solution as well.

If you need/want UniNet in your area, they also have a "dealership" program.

I must be honest, I've used Skype on the Uninet 256 Home and it's *terrible*.. they say 'upgrade to a Business package' but why should one have to do that? Skype works better on a Telkom modem. Don't get me wrong I think Uninet's speed is great and I do reccommend them, but FTP and Skyping need to be improved cos soon there will be competition & people will drop Uni for someone else if they can't do either of those. I've tried updating the Hellkom site at a mate's house on the 256 and it's a bitch, the 256 times out just uploading the 52KB front page![:(!]

FTP and Skype, only problems. P2P is a waste of resources IMO, if you can't download something via HTTP off the Web it's probably illegal anyways.... no offense to any P2P users [:)]

MaD: They figuared the problem. Skype uses random ports, this kinda makes crap when they fall into the low proiority ports. I hav used skype to an adsl user from uninet 128k. Works gr8 during the day. Once you hit 19:00 and p2p is open say good bye!
