ID and driver's license scan at security

I recently went into a complex at Century City without them checking - then when I left they wanted to check my drivers license - which I then found out I didn't have on me... what a mission getting out of there, eventually threatened that I would drive through the boom if they didn't open it as they were holding me illegally.

Yes, there is. It's called the POPI act (but not all provisions of the act have gone live yet).
The POPI act will eventually cover all aspects of the recording, handling and storage of personal information.
There may also be portions of the RICA act which are also relevant.

POPI governs the use/collection/handling/storage of the info as I understand it.
The actual reason, or law as to WHY they must collect the info in the first place, is what I am referring to.
What are the laws requiring you to present machine readable identification to enter a company premises?

There is no law that REQUIRES it. They do it for security reasons.

But there is no law the explicitly disallows it. Therefore it is not illegal. Their storage/retention of the data after they have collected it may not be up to POPI standards though but that is a different matter.
 
We pick up a lady for Church some Sunday's from an old age home in fourways that does this. Its annoying. It could also be unsafe I am guessing if they lose my info. They scan the license and the car disk on entry and exit and call the unit with your name to give you access.
 
So the essence for private property is: It's not illegal, it's potentially not safe, there is nothing we can do about it other then we give this business premises, private home or winefarm a miss.
 
So what information can they collect by scanning barcodes? How can they get this information from the barcodes?

Whatever is shown to the human eye on the drivers license card and the vehicle license disk, but since it's a barcode, a scanner can read it, versus it being entered manually or being read via OCR software.
