ID smart cards will replace books by 2014

yet another cash racket for the cANCer
they gonna screw us all for e-toll. Imagine the long waiting lists and making people pay for this. I also wish to wager the.security will be weaker.than cat.piss

no way to duplicate it they say......sounds like a challenge to me for some...

About time. Cards seem to make so much more sense than those books you all carry around. I might even pick up one for myself. :)

Mine has been washed hundreds of times and is looking so vrot, will upgrade when this happens.

Oh so now it is a "me" and "them" situation. No ID card for you Mr. Yankee hat! :p

Ja...I also would much prefer a ID card. This ID book is just bleh. Though...mine is still in pretty good nick. Gives me a great excuse to get a better pic on there too. Bloody awfull picture I have now.

Just hope they dont rip us a new one with this.

The cards are a good idea except that they require periodic renewal. Yet another reason to stand in line.

Same reason I 'd get one my ID photo is the worst photo i have ever taken in my life -

If it's between those who have ID books and those who don't? I guess it is an us and them situation. ;)

And yes, I have several NY Yankees hats. . . as well as hoodies, t-shirts, socks and other memorabilia - including a Mr Potato Head. :D

Bad idea all round

Sounds like its doomed to failure already!
This project has risen from the ashes many times and gone though a whole series of "drivers" I have been following it from way back before 2000.

The device they will use is called a "Morphotouch" in essence it will bring big brother right to your side
IF you have watched NCIS you will have noticed the use of this device -- probabaly already in use by "Homeland-Security"
It will include a whole lot of other stuff including banking -- in fact pretty much your whole life will be on that card *OPEN* to any "state" employee who will be able to demand it on sight and will also demand a fingerprint and will then be able to access your whole life while you stand in front of them.

You think the eTolling saga is bad news -- just wait -- probably have the eTolling reflect on this card as well -- no problem to also fit an RFID ( that gets it's power from an outside source via induction )

Do not be suprised if you need this card to access your bank account -- ie NO card NO cash / banking

Start preparing for the new "Slave-State" -- go see "The Hunger Games"

NO WAY do I give my fingerprints to ANYONE -- arrest me first

I would be fine with this if we can use our old ID books or the new card. FORCING us to replace our books with the card is unneccesary and will only be a cash cow.

Oh boy here we go again. Another Government tender fiasco just waiting to happen ....

Pretty sure I heard on Cape Talk that the first issuing of the card will be for free. Anyone else heard mention of cost yet?

Edit:
So how much will the new smart card cost? The first card will be free and replacing it will cost about the same price as replacing an ID book which is about R170. Home affairs say that it is working with other government departments to get drivers licenses and social security information loaded onto the smart card.

“There is no way you can duplicate this card.”

Highly doubt that, remember who got the tender for the driver's licence card? Yeah, the one who beat his terminal illness by playing presidential golf.

Secure card or not, the weak link is still the officers of home affairs who issue false documentation in exchange for bribes. Mark my words, there will be massive accounts of voter fraud come next election. Guaranteed.

I'll believe this when I see it. They been promising to replace the ID book with a card for almost 12 years already and nothing has come of it.

With the type of backlash expressed in this thread, it doesn't surprise me why.
