ID smart cards will replace books by 2014

Oh boy, there's so much crazy in this post I don't even know where to start.

I for one will have no problem getting the smart card if it ever materialises.
 
Dlamini-Zuma said it would be useless for a person to steal someone’s smart card as they would not be able to use it, since the fingerprints would not match. She said the cards had hidden security measures which would make duplication impossible.

The problem with ID books is not forgeries, the problem is corrupt DoHA employees accepting bribes to issue genuine ID books with fake identity details.

While I prefer the idea of a smart card ID, I don't see how Dummy-Zuma will be making it 100% impossible for the corruption that is rife in her department to spill over into smart card IDs with fake identity details.

Ok, I know something about this from the software side and I can assure you that "any state employee" will assuredly not have access to all your detail. This stuff is serious and will be very secure. And as for fingerprints - they already have em unless you have no ID or Passport. In the future your fingerprints will be captured if you want to do ANYTHING at Home Affairs.

This is a major step forward. Instead of waiting 6 weeks for your ID you will wait a couple of days. If you've ever been at Home Affairs HQ you will know that they are due for a massive upgrade.

IF you have ever been at Home Affairs you will know how easy it is to find "help"

See my other links -- any old joe traffic cop , metro cop , etc etc just has to flash one of these things around and you WILL bend over -- Law is the Law !

I am sure it will be very secure and very helpful to catch "crooks" -- just as helpful as FICA & RICA and all the other spin cr@p.

How much do you think this little upgrade is going to cost ?
Who do you think will be paying for it ?
Who do you think has the tender / contract ?

Dude, the system is being written to stop the "help". Because it is electronic you now have audit data that can be stored and it is much harder to cheat state of the art software (that has been tried and tested) versus the paper system they have at the moment. The software is written to stop fraud.

How is then that every day we read of some new fraud -- in EVERY Dept -- even the SAPS are involved -- at the top levels

Just read about the Richard Mdluli saga and NIS , CI , the whole bunch are rotten.

Who , one may ask , is managing the eTOLLING system ? ( driving it in fact )

A foreign commercial company gets the tender ( and actually run the thing ) but the state -- which stills has the "democratic" monopoly on the use of force ( legal or otherwise ) appears to be in charge.

One can then actually try and work out WHO calls the shots ! ( and gets the profits and bankrolls the politicians )
