Actually it will take about 5 min for the new card to be issued as the printer will be attached to the PC at DHA. If all goes well the system will be rolled out in November this year. Saw it in action and it works, the minister has her new ID card.

Can I apply for one now? I love progress. I wish more can be built into the card ie. link my bank cards, Makro cards etc. then goodbye Mr wallet.
 
It's still in testing to determine any flaws and loopholes. As soon as the minister gives the go ahead (November) or ear 2013 then all DHA offices will be upgraded.

Great but what measures will there be to prevent corrupt officials from entering fake details into the system and then encoding a new ID card with those fake details?

For example, what prevents a Nigerian drug dealer that probably does not have legit South African citizenship, from paying a DoHA employee to provide an ID card encoded with the Nigerian's fingerprint minutiae associated with the Nigerian's name or someone else's name (identity theft)?

What prevents it with the current system?

Maybe a temporary ID. After everything was captured it will go through to Government Printing and then to the couriers which will bring it back to the branch you applied. You are looking at 4 to 7 days.

Without saying too much, let's just say that you will have to bribe a lot of people and pray to God the software specifically written to stop fraud doesn't flag you.
 
As far as I know the system will have double sided screens so when an official types or modifies info you will be able to see everything.

The flaw in any security system is humans, you can't fix that.

That is the problem with the current system, there is nothing consequential to actively prevent corruption.

In that case the criminals will also bribe the person(s) who are tasked with watching and waiting for red flags to be raised.

Properly designed systems can make it extremely difficult for corruption to flourish, time will tell if all the necessary bases were covered in the iterative design phases and architecture of this particular project.

We are talking about tens (maybe hundreds) of people that need to be bribed. You'll also need to go find "a list" of names of people who have access to the data including contractors etc. And you have to future proof "the plan" because these things do have a way of leaving a trail and someday someone will see that something doesn't add up.

But if you are creative, desperate or rich enough anything is possible I suppose.
