So I had this thought.

I think as developers most of us often try to think up random cool ideas. I mean why wouldn't you want to want to make the next Facebook for instance? Or just something really cool and you stick on the internet and it goes viral. I mean I've seen people do some amazing stuff with just things like JS and CSS and then I have to sit and wonder about the enterprise applications I mainly work on. Which if we're honest mostly comes down to the same thing of an interface with a lil' bit of logic that updates a DB.

For example now I just had a simple project concept but my first thoughts shortly after are that it's probably already been done before and even if I did do it then someone at Google (or where ever) could probably do it a far more elegant way or if it hasn't been done then someone has probably already thought about or it's a stupid idea. I've seen this mentality once or twice in the work place.

So now I'm wondering if it's a case of because we're fairly disconnected to the big IT giants of the world, we begin to lose confidence in ourselves even though we could probably churn out some really good developers? Maybe it's just me and my own self confidence?

And my random stupidly simple idea :p

I hate going into complexes and you have to go through the whole security check where they scan your license plate and drivers license. Then you still have to either type in a code or shout it out to the guy to key it in for you. Why can't this be managed and something as stupid as using NFC and placing my phone on the pad to send the key across for me with those details.

Not sure if I should be depressed or confused about this :wtf:

Get your foot in the door, I just sold my first web site the other day.
You need to know who you are or who you want to be, do you want to become the next Zuckerberg? Or do you want to make cash silently from your basement with minimal human interaction?I choose the latter and this is working out for me for now.

I like the NCF idea. Then you can give your friends access to the system and they don't have to phone in from security to get through and types of BS.

Haha ... keep telling yourself that

I prefer it too actually. I hate dealing with people on a daily basis. I've slowly realized that most people lack common sense / courtesy and that makes me want to murder everyone.... so I'd rather take myself out and sit quietly in a dark basement (or nice apartment) and work away without having to deal with the human element any day of the week :)

Um, that's what Zuckerberg did. And Bill Gates.

Didn't Zuckerberg look for investors? And Bill had a whole team.
Invesors only came later. Initially it was just him and a college friend or 2.

Gates worked from his garage, alone I believe.

Well i did get paid so it is working out for me.Im not a people person.Prefer being alone, besides thats how all the big guys started out.

Exactly! :D

Dealing with the general public on a daily basis is the pits and I pity anyone who has to go through this...

In fact, I hated it so much that I quit my job and did my own thing... Peace and quiet in a cul-de-sac by the beach for 2.5 years ftw...

What about people who wont have NFC on their phones? I know you get a sticker or something similar for that, but the estate / complex will have to run a dual system, where, now, they only have to run one (cost-wise) - Might be wrong, if you can find a solution that covers that bridge, it should work.

It doesn't necessarily have to be on the phone alone. The complex/estate can issue cars the NFC sticker. For friends and family with phones capable of NFC, they don't need to issue stickers, just load them on the system to come and go as they please. Then, as a last resort for an occasional/rare visitor, they can phone/open the gate as they do now.

Agree here, it's not bound to the phone. Look here:

NFC tags, that's the answer... You could just issue guest tags for the period of the visit, in order to get one maybe you need to be noticed in advance so that security can issue this to you or something.

Why not one step further and do it with Bluetooth? Residents' phones will pair automatically and the gate will open.

The residents can then send a one time password to visitors to allow their phones to pair up.
Bluetooth is more widely available than NFC anyway, and you don't have to take your phone out of your pocket and stick it out a window which might cause it to drop anyway.

Wouldn't it be possible to have a wifi network as well. Develop and app in conjunction with that. Once its on the allocated complex network you get different options available, so residents might have more features whereas guests only have limited options. Plus, you can piggyback of it and provide a communications network throughout the complex allowing messages to be sent quickly and easily.

There are places who offer the one-time password option, where they send a unique password to friends via sms, for their visit, they enter the visitors details on an existing cloud-based system, the visitor receives an sms with the password, costing the "property owner" R1 per sms. They can then choose for how many times that password is valid, IE 2 times, knowing the visitor might arrive, but need to leave for a quick meeting or drive to the shop and need to come back later.

Jackal Creek Golf Estate offers that in Roodepoort.
