"Idle" network packet activity?

It seems as if my home network (2x XP machines via marconi router) is running more traffic in idle times tan before (3 packets per second send & recieve) without any other processes running on the networks.

This seems a bit high to me, and googling it got no results. I know viruses / trojans sometimes show network activity when stealing info, but it's a lot higher than 3 packets in my experience.

It seems like something is constantly checking/updating status. Can't see what, though...

Anyone else think this is abnormal?

Didn't know about netstat. Thanks. Found out (silly, actually) that it was my Synergy jabbering away. Should have known better, but thanks.

Used netstat -b which gave me the name of the calling executable. Very handy indeed.
