Well hopefully this is iBurst's prelude to something much bigger. Remember, iBurst isn't just an ISP and it's be nice to have some competition to IS and SAIX.

Why would you need an iBurst router? This is an ADSL product, I'm sure they'll allow you to use a router of your choosing?

I had a good experience with iburst when I used them- much less problems than I had with telkom

for lower caps its better because of the added telkom line rental charges- eg if you have a 2 gig account with afrihost- thats in effect 159 + 59 = R218 for 2 gigs vs iburst R100. For this reason I will consider changing- I can get 4 gigs for the same price im paying now for 2

Don't you need to get extra equipment and sign a contract to connect to iBurst?. I already have an ADSL router, and didn't need to sign any contracts or purchase any extra equipment when I switched to Afrihost.

This is ADSL, there is no "coverage area" from iBurst. Either you have a Telkom (and in future iBurst with LLU, etc) ADSL line or you don't.

Which means your last mile is Telkom (currently).
 
No thanks I will stay with Afrihost for the time being.

Better pricing and pretty quick to respond to support queries.

They aren't going to win customers with this pricing.
 
Can someone explain this to me as if I were a child.

Is this product a full ADSL replacement in that it is cable all the way from iburst's national network to the device in my home or is the last mile still wireless?

This solution (currently) uses Telkom for last mile access. The backbone then breaks out onto iBurst's network so that they (instead of SAIX or IS) control where traffic is directed, that being the portion of the SAT cable the buy from one of the cable owners and perhaps a redundant satellite link (this part is a guess). So they are personally responsible for your latency and traffic shaping locally and within reason internationally.

iBurst is going to be selling ADSL access. ie. The same as you can buy from Webafrica, TelkomSA, Mweb, etc. You will still need a ADSL line from Telkom and then you purchase your ISP account from iBurst.

You realise that DSL in SA is provided over copper? In other words a Telkom line... so no iBurst Wireless modem required.

Yes, iBurst do have a wDSL (wireless DSL) service which it a high capacity link - but that's not what's being launched here.

I think overall it will be interesting to see how this service pans out long-term - if they innovate with combined/bundled services I think it has a fair chance in this market.

Obviously those only after the lowest costs per gig (which is most of the MyADSL'ers) won't find this massively appealing - but I suspect this will do well with businesses etc due to brand (blah blah)
 
Ok, so they are just going to be another ISP. I'll have to pay the Telkom analogue line rental + telkom ADSL line rental + IBurst data usage costs.

In other words business as usual.

ambo, it's not quite the same thing. Yes, they are selling ADSL access. However, iBurst are personally terminating on their own network unlike WebAfrica/Axxess/Afrihost which either terminate on SAIX or IS network. This is especially important for users of the iGame platform.

Unless you're a big user of the iGame platform, that is the only way you'd really benefit over any other ADSL users.
 
I wonder if it would be free to play HON - as its about 100 megs an hour to play... per person!
