I stopped at a quickshop last night... and there was a sign along the lines of "If you are paying less than R14.20 for a pack its probably illegal..."

:D

Now every smoker will be looking for these siggies :D

Its simple really

there has been readily available cheap cigarettes for a while now.
Now the companies who manufacture here i.e. the big boys are facing a thinning of the pocket lining due to the recession, they run this campaign.. same as piracy as someone pointed out.
I also think SARS is pushing for this because with the cheap cigs they are being defrauded.

The whole campaign is ironic in the extreme. BAT (British American Tobacco) makes a product that they know people get addicted to and probably kills half of their client base. Yet they portray themselves as the good guys by saying hijackers are bad.

Not only are they concerned about their lost profits but they are also saying, "Hey, we're not as bad as the hijacker, gun-runner, WTFE". They're trying to improve their image in the public's eye.

It's a bloody disgrace that this is allowed to air - it's advertising FFS!

They know in SA that crime is a touchy subject, so just as they have done with the piracy issue, they pull it into the illegal cigarettes issue.
