Illegal download warning

Do I have it wrong? They may only release your online 'behaviour' with a court order.

They (ISPs) are required to keep records of all your activity (for what 6 months? Longer?)

Does sound like terror tactics... Guess someone on the staff wants to use that bandwidth with their RS account :D

To be fair to Webafrica, I don't think they necessarily gave my details over to IS or invaded my privacy per se. I recall reading about similar emails to people on this board before and IIRC what happens is that the Copyright people can trace the infringement as far as the ISP (IS) and then inform them that one of their subscribers have been downloading illegal software. It is then expected from the ISP to pass on the warning to its subscriber/dealer/reseller. Let me quote the exact email:

"Hi **

IS ( Internet solutions ) has informed us that you are downloading Illegal software
Notice of Claimed Infringement
Please note that Illegal software will not be tolerated on the IS network.

If you could please refrain from using BitTorrent again. Reason being that (IS) has your ip address and they will block you as well as black list you.

Please see our Acceptable User Policy below:
http://www.webafrica.co.za/docs/aup.html

Once this matter has been resolved , could you please give us feedback on the situation.

These people do have a right to protect their intellectual property, to a point.

Had a similar story a few years back with Axxess and Sony.

Played it safe for a bit, then it was full steam ahead :p

I've never heard of a warning from SAIX, but I stand to be corrected.

Anyway... Maybe use one of the news servers instead. If your ISP ever has the gall to warn you about that, you can politely remind them that you downloaded it off their server.

It would be like your drug dealer ratting you out to the cops. Not gonna happen. :p

and to be safe- keep a copy of Dban next to your pc to destroy any data on your HDD's when the ***** hits the fan. lol

Is it illegal to use the bit torrent protocol? What if you are downloading "freeware"
:D

tell them to eff off

I'd say make sure you have all the correct protocols in place to ensure they can't snoop you again (encryption, proxies etc.)

Then go crazy, as per usual. If they send you a similar notice, reply telling them in no uncertain terms that they're invading your privacy by monitoring your internet traffic without a court order, and that they should politely go and sexually abuse themselves.

And you may wanna add that you're gonna be CC'ing that letter on this board. The entire industry seems to know that it's widely read.

This.

can't get any of the suggested two peer guardian software packages to work, really not worth my energy if they can't write software that works!.
