'Illegal lottery' rocks Vodacom

I hope they give Vodacom hell. Vodacom is licensed to be a cell phone service provider which is something they are getting worse at. I've been complaining about poor reception in a supposedly fully covered area in Gauteng for a very long time. Even had a Vodacom technical guy here who said that they know the towers were positioned 'less optimally' but he does not foresee Vodacom doing anything because of 'budget constraints' despite their profits. Now they have budgets to play at games, gambling etc at a premium charge. That's just plain greedy.:mad::mad:
 
Well, if I was able to send 15000 (R150000) sms's to win the BMW I surely would've done that.

I wouldnt mind winning one of those but unfortunately I am a MTN client and has been for 14 years. Spending around about R180000 I probably could've bought myself one long ago already.

Cape Town IT, internet and media law specialist Reinhardt Buys said the competition was illegal as the SMS messages encourage multiple entries, and thus contravened the Wireless Application Service Provider Association (Waspa) code of conduct, which regulates cellphone networks.

Geez us South Africans really need to smell the coffee already. Is it Vodacom's resposibility to manage our budgets / expenditure? Or should we start taking charge and resposibility for our own actions. Granted sometimes we are screwed by the evil which is corporate profit margins, but hell, noone is forcing us to push that button...

They curb credit allowence by implementing laws to control this kind of thing, then when we are allowed to use as much as we want, we complain that they don't curb our credit. Just no pleasing some.

However, one thing that I think most agree with is: Die Telkom die....:p
 
mfour what they are doing is the same as taking ppl to a casino

saying the more you play the more chance you have of winning a car

its sick that ppl take part in these kinds of things, vodacom is feeding ppl's need for a new car

i think these comps are sick man, they wont give cars to an oke who only spend 10 bucks and thats where i think its wrong

u need to spend a ton of money to "possibly" win

The competition begs the question whether you want a paternal state or not. Should it be the state’s responsibility to protect, say, those with gambling addictions against this kind of thing? Or should we say that as long as the terms and conditions are clear with nothing hidden, then it is up to the individual to take responsibility. I tend to go with the latter viewpoint.

As a result it isn’t sick. Coz if you want a paternal state then you cannot cry foul when big brother starts to do a lot more things in your best interests.

I should mention that I do believe that Vodacom is in the wrong with respect to the monitoring of accounts. They must I believe have mechanisms that track account usage. I would say that when account usage is at double its average, there should be an active decision on their part to warn or ask the person about their account.

If anything this should fall under the law that regulates gambling.

I don't understand how people can send SMSs running up bills of R 150 000. That is stupid, irresponsible and illogical - for R 150 000 deposit you can get a decent second hand BMW with almost negligible monthly installments. I mean hello! You could get a new one as well without too much of a problem.

Nevertheless, from what I have read this is a lottery, and they are sending unsolicited sms messages (to me for example). So prepare to join FNB in the dog box boys.

Can topup my cellphone anyplace, anytime from my cellphone, no need to go to a spaza shop or PnP for an airtime voucher. Also, can topup other people's cellphones from mine :D

So there really is no need for a contract (on my side).
 
I strongly believe that Vodacom has done nothing wrong in terms of the law , however i feel that loopholes are purposely created to allow companies to exploit the public.
 
Vodacom = Crack dealer:D

If people are addicted to entering competitions.
