Not necessaryly... Having a driver's license that allows you to drive a kombi, does not allow you to operate a taxi service.... ;)
 
my only question is what implications does this hold for WUG's. Do they too need licences now?
 
wugs dont sell anything
wugs are non-profit, non-commercial entities
wugs stay within the set power output limits
wugs are lisence excempt
 
This is like government saying 'do as we say, not as we do'.

WAPA or whoever you are, nobody's listening...
 
My understanding is that ICASA will charge R 50,000 for an ECS license and/or R 50,000 for an ECNS license (assuming that they will actually license new operators)
And they charge R 50,000 for amending a license, and licenses are NOT transferrable/cedable.

Is this cost over and above the "WAPA's current fee of R2 500 (excluding VAT) for a class ECS and ECNS application for new members is set to increase to R3 500 (excluding VAT) as of 1 March 2010" ?

If true then the authorities certainly dont make it easy for operators to get legal.

i am running a wlan between a few friends i will not pay for a license

aaa but jawug requires paying a membership fee these days, so they do have a limit license

That's why we all contribute to the licenses by using "membership" fees. You can see it as belonging to a club, but this money strictly all goes to the licensing.
Thereafter, ALL of that money gets dumped back into JAWUG to do peering with people, getting a IPv6 block from AfriNIC and upgrading current highsites.

So yeah, the money actually goes to getting these ECNS licenses etc.


ambo knows a lot more re: legalities and I'm sure he'll pop in to correct me if I'm wrong.
 
Illegal WISPs in SA

WISPs and whoever they affiliate to must be registered with ICASA. Using someone like WAPA just make your life as a wisp owner easier by taking the paper work out of your hands.

WAPA is and will be the first and foremost the best access providers association to be available in south africa for all the wisp companies in SA.

Yea like anything else there are the illegal one's, but so in every industry in SA.

See what wapa has done for there members, then say something bad about them.
