Are there any decent free programs out there to stitch say 3 images together to get a panoramic view?

Also, are there any local image sharing sites?

I do all my stitching and blending manually. It is definitely worth the extra effort.

I like MS ICE as well. It's pretty impressive

I was just going to say Microsoft ICE! Best free stitching software out there. ICE automatically adjusts exposure issues to so that the transition from image to image is near perfect. Really helpful if you make exposure mistakes.

Quantum how you deal with lens distortion and circular motion if you stitch by hand? Care to share?

I use the lens correction tool as well as the warp tool (to adjust problem areas). Then I blend with a soft brush and use gradient overlays to fix exposure issues.

I used an opensource program called hugin, stitching about 15 photos together of a 360 degree view of some farmland- worked perfectly- you can check out the image here

(the image ended up a little curved, so used paint program to cut out the rectangular shape from it)

I have used ICE and Hugin before. Hugin is much more powerful and gives you a lot more control, while ICE sometimes messes it up and then you cannot point it in the right direction.

I managed to get Hugin working once . . . and only once. Every other time it crashed :o

Hugin FTW! It handles those bigger jobs better than anything I've tried before. The new version(s) also crashed out on me last time I tired to show someone how awesome it is, but my trusty old(er) version at home does the job every time.
