Imagine Uncapped Feedback

My hostname says 196.215.x.x.dynamic.isadsl.co.za, so it doesnt seem to indicate it now. The last one that I can recognise is tbnb-esr-2.dynamic.isadsl.co.za.

This is part of the clarity I'm hoping for... the IP is something to I'm not sure of but tbnb-esr-2 I'm assuming is an identifier for a second edge server/router for 'tbnb'. All of these things can be clarified by IS and help us on this process. Will be pushing tomorrow to see what progress we can make on this.

... on a lighter note - shame it's not tbob as I could have suggested 'The Back of Beyond'... clearly need sleep :D

I found the tbnb..... it's the exchange in our neighbourhood (serves quite a large area)......
Thanks for your effort.

It really is unfortunate that none of the other ISPs have made a fuss, that would really have forced something to happen I think.

At this point in time, while I am happy that the meeting happened and discussions are taking place, it doesn't seem like anything is urgently pushing IS to fix things, which is very sad... "OMG everyone is pissed off, we'll sort our **** out ASAP" wouldve been much more desirable, but it seems more like a "ah huh, sure we'll look into that".

Perhaps I'm a little pessimistic, perhaps I am still just clouded by the fact that I am downloading at under 25kbps all night...

Yeah last night was horrible..... was averaging 30MB an hour.....

@ppedrick

Your efforts ARE appreciated, but it is very difficult not to lose faith in the product.

+1..... but I think it's a case of we just have to pressure IS until they give us a reasonable product.

The problem is though we need VOLUMES... As ppedrick said, none of the other ISPs joined in the fight... It doesnt give IS much of a reason to lift a finger... Or rather SERIOUSLY investigate things! As far as I recall, they have been "investigating issues" all month and nothings come of it so far so...

Completely agree with all the above sentiments. However, I'm used to dealing with large corporates, from a consultancy angle and also the UK government. So although this seems on the surface to be ignoring the issues, it was in fact resonably productive. If only for the fact that I now have legitimate reason to contact IS senior management and also to 'help' them with their transparency and product development.

It was concerning to hear that despite the several thousand Uncapped Basic accounts they hold, they were unaware that a large number of their clients were upset, however, it's indicative of a company that requires a 'spring clean'. Browsing these boards for 20 minutes could havesolved that. Despite the fact that these board are regarded in the industry as being for moaners, whores and the general high maintenance customer - these boards are also a great place to start for a little feedback on your product. You guys are the leading edge if this sector and are essentially the problem area that all ISPs have to build in and deal with... We just need to make SA business understand that we need to embrace that rather than ignore it or push it away.

Anyway, back to this mapping research...

EDIT: Just a side note. I am known for being quite tenacious and depite our size in this sector, Imagine is well known, within IS, for it's experience and knowledge. Both of these facts will mean that this issue does not go away. I'm used to dealing with large business and also a large number of journalists. Combining the two, supplying models and plans, to help things move on worked wonders to create an efficient and transparent industry. I've done it before and so I don't see why the same can't be done here.

Yeah true, forums do have a lot of moaners.
But...... MyBB is a respectable (probably with the most respectable forum in SA) place and is ont only full of moaners. Why else would there be so many company representatives here?
And yes, if IS had merely glanced at how many people have been struggling with issues with the uncapped accounts..... then maybe the problem would have been solved earlier...
But until then, bug them until they give in :P

Ive also got this shaped account from your guys. Its okayish.

I was on your uncapped express package last month but decided to try this one out instead. Ive only really been using it for 5 days solidly this month (most recent 5 days) .

So on the 10th / 11th local latencys were perfect.

30ms stable without a glitch to is news server , now its back to 150ms during the day.

http downloading used to go at 455kb/sec for me (max of my line) local during the day , now on quickshare where i used to max it out during peak hours. I cant even hit 10kb/sec ?

Torrents aren't actually too bad , it crawls most of the day , then i get some weird burst speeds from extactly after midnight to 7am (then it stops and pings go bad again)

Websites time out constantly , my connection drops alot too (from what i can see in irc , but its not just me .. other people too) .

Like ... Im trying to load a site , it wont load , then all of a sudden it loads in half a second again?

Please address these issues with IS aswell or your technical staff

Thanks

PS : Oh am I throttled ? I heard IS is putting a 30gig threshold on these accounts now?

Alot of people are experiancing my problems after they hit 30/40gigs on these accounts (thats horrible and complete waste of money if this is true)

Yeah, those problems are unfortunately well-known amongst us 384 users too... the support guys are only too aware of it......

Lol , to make it worse i had to buy another account this month (one that works)

I do remote support work etc , and my manager started moaning :P

A very quick response here to your throttling query and it's very important you know this.

There are 2 types of IS uncapped account.
1. The IS Uncapped Basic, which most resellers sell.
2. The 'per GB' model that is then resold as uncapped.

Afrihost and MyISP use the 2nd hence the throttling and sever shaping after 30GB (or whatever their limit). As they pay 'per GB' you can only download so much before the cost to run the account out-weighs the the cost you pay... e.g. @ R25 per GB to IS it's 20GB on average.
This is why we don't sell this type of account as we don't believe that the it is the Tier 2 company's job to do this.

We, and many other IS resellers, sell the IS Uncapped Basic, which is shaped 10)% of the time 24/7. There is no throttling and no limits. Full stop.

It seems that many people are not passing on this difference and it's also part of our issue with clarity in the market. Just because it's IS it doesn't make it the same as others. Unfortunately there are too many companies who have profited from over-branding someone elses product and haven't diversified. We are trying to launch a campaign for clarity and decent ADSL so that the Tier 2 businesses can get on with the value added services that we should be supplying... unfortunately I believe that this means that the purely over-branding and marketing companies who do not have an infrastructure need to rethink their position in this sector as there is likely no longer room for another person to take a 'cut' without adding something back in.

Thanks for the clarification there. at least we know now why Afrihost's so slow now (why then advertise "100's of GBs" ???)....

So these accounts are shaped 100% of the time? Lately I've considered that.... at first it had a definite window that I could notice (difference between 35KBps and 1KBps).

Haha

I know its not imagines fault :( I had your express package for a while , its great .. great support (back when you werent flooded with shaped uncapped problems)

Im using another one of imagines packages atm , too lazy to find another isp and needed to get some work done.

How is it shaped though ? It really feels like throttling.

I just downloaded the same quickshare file but pausing my torrents (15 of them going at 40kb/sec totol) and hey that quickshare file is going at 40kb/sec now ? instead of 0.1

Hows that possible ? Thought http and p2p have differant throtteling pools?

Just repeat the process.

downloading few torrents at 30kb/sec .. browsing times out , i close utorrent and its alot better?

hi 384 :D (btw i have 4mbit)

Speedtest shows

same upload and download , seems like i can get more than 512 :) , sorry for that 384 comment (that was rude)

You know - now my initial anger over this product is subsiding, I am starting to laugh at some of the comments you guys come up with...
I really hate the idea that our clients are getting 1/8th line speed, however, I do feel that progress is being made with the people that can make the right changes.

Dravenza - keep up the laziness! We appreciate it hugely and I hope you are continuing to get the best service you can.

RE: Shaping and throttling.
I am promised that they do not throttle these accounts. However, as I mentioned it in my feedback after the IS meeting yesterday, we have 3 problems:
- IS are having their own problems and either the management are denying it or the IT team or hiding it (their IPC/network overload).
- The SAT-3/SAFE and SEACOM cables have been up and down over the past 6 weeks.
- Telkom seem to be in a mad panic as their exchanges in certain places are overloading and they are either not informing anyone or denying it.

Again, with a bit of clarity I feel that the consumers in this marketplace, although annoyed, will be much more forgiving when they understand where the error lies.

EDIT: I have found out that there is an IS network service RSS feed... except it requires the same login as our company usues to order and manage accounts directly through them... so we can't put it live as we might as well just give away free accounts.

Here's my latest speedtest results. My browsing, etc seems to confirm as much.
