About 2 days ago I started to look at the email settings on my phone, which is now a very real option. I use my student email account at the university since it is available on the intranet, free of charge, where I am most of the day anyway. Its webbased and I assume an IMAP server (there's an IMP version note in the corner of the site).
This all comes together nicely. My phone has an IMAP4 protocol choice and a few settings and servers to set.
I thought this would be straight forward to set up but, not quite so.

I've got the setup to not give an error and look busy for a few seconds, showing GPRS icon. Still doesn't retrieve any headers or complete emails.

Below are the settings (of interest) and what I currently have them set to. Can anyone tell me which of these are related to the university email server and more or less what it typically is for other servers? I can then start harassing  the IT guys for those settings.

Under Messages|Email|Settings|Email profile:
APN = myMTN
Login ID = mtnwap
Password =
DNS1 = 209.212.96.1 (got this from the PPP connection info while connected, ipconfig)
DNS2 = 209.212.97.1

Under Messages|Email|Settings|Email Account:
User Name = (I made this the same as my account login user name, User ID)
Email address = (diddo)
*SMTP server = mail.mtn.co.za
*SMTP port = 25
Protocol type = IMAP4 (can be POP3, but the email server is IMAP, as far as I understand)
*IMAP4 server = student.up.ac.za
*IMAP4 port = 143
User ID = (I made this my login name used when going through the website as normal)
Password = (I'm fairly sure this is the password for my email account, and has been set so)

*I suspect these are the settings of interest at the moment and I'll have to get this from some or other IT fellow from the department managing this server. Otherwise I can just hope to find the guy who first set up the server, if he's still around...

Incidentally, I get the following CB on channel 910. What does it mean?
146C: 60-0X-18.0-KA:
240: 3: 14: SEC-18C

The settings appear OK to me except tht the DNS is normally set to 'user assigned' or 0.0.0.0 so that MTN can give the updated DNS settings during login.

I am not sure if the university allows external access to its imap server or not but I would check with IT first. I use IMAP myself and it seems to work fine.

Something fishy...

Hi Aessa,

I can confirm that your settings are "correct" (meaning, they will work on a PC). I check my student mail from home quite regularly.

The only settings specific to the university are the server names (and obviously your username/password). The ports are standard.

I've tried it on my K700i with POP3 settings, but it doesn't work. It says:
Finding server
and then goes back to the inbox. I know the server is found, because if I enter a wrong name, it complains (Server not found). However, if my password is incorrect, the behaviour is identical.

I've successfully downloaded from my MTNloaded account. It says:
Finding server
Server Found
Receiving emails
No new messages
(or slightly different when there are new messages.)

I'm also having trouble with my Gmail account, but perhaps that's got to do with SSL (which is required).

*IMAP4 server = student.up.ac.za
*IMAP4 port = 143

Just shot in the dark, here at STB our mail servers are imap.sun.ac.za , my first guess would've been over there it would be imap.up.ac.za . [just like outgoing is usually smtp.xxx. and pop3 usually are pop.xxx ].

General reply

Thanks for the great responses. Great forum, starting to get a strong liking of MTN...

A general reply to the above replies:
diabolus: I'll try "imap.up.ac.za" as the server, might just work. As for external access, it might be a problem, but I'll see.
jano:

Is this also from UP? Or another university?

MTNBB: I'll set the DNS back to 0.0.0.0, but it was like that and then I got a definite DNS error. So I'll just change them whenever MTN changes them, I can just get them the same way again.

Anyway, next stop is the IT guys. See if the server name is something absurd or maybe they just don't allow it.

I don't know much about email servers, so I'm assuming that the outgoing (SMTP) server must be mtn's, since I am on their network when sending and no one said its wrong - I'll check this by actually sending a mail.

That sheepish feeling...

Got that sheepish feeling just now...

DNS servers are back to 0.0.0.0. The DNS error occurs, rather obviously, when the IMAP server is non-existent. I got a bit of info from the email settings site, the mail server is said to be student.up.ac.za.
The phone's booklet says that User name is the name shown when you send the mail.

This gets a nice effect. Quick connection to the server, a flashing mail icon and then nothing.
jano:
I've tried it on my K700i with POP3 settings, but it doesn't work. It says:
I've changed my password to something wrong, and the same effect is obtained. Somaybe its the phone, I'll get an IMAP email app. for the PC and try that. Or just forward the UP emails to some POP3 server somewhere.

Thanks

Hi
IMAP server for UP is student.up.ac.za on port 143.
If you cant connect using the host name, try use the IP address of the server instread : 137.215.6.17
The server you are trying to connect to is publically available on port 143, so if you cant connect, the problem is on your device.
I have just made a successful connection to the server using MTN GPRS...
If you still cant come right, PM me and I will talk you through it.
Cheers -

Mine works

I am using a Nokia 6600 which doesn't even allow you to set the port number, with CellC. All the settings above works fine!!

I am assuming CellC have an outgoing mail-server, assuming it to be mail.cellc.co.za? Sorry - know this isn't really relevent in the MTN forum.

oh, no idea what the cellc outgoing smtp server is. and i cant seem to find it on the web site anywhere. you may want to call ccustomer support...
please post it here when you get an answer from them!

MTN does not block access to one's normal SMTP server but the ISP itself (correctly) only allows users who have connectivity access on their network to prevent spamming. When we first set up data services we put this in to make things easier. It is now an essential feature of this and other services of ours.

The other alternative is for the ISP to have an SMTP server which requires a user name and password. Some ISPs still have this (for when their customers go overseas) and some global ISP services have this. I suggest rather using ours as we can better manage the whole experience, but no harm in having another address for backup (if you have an 'enabled' ISP).

Cellc GPRS outgoing (SMTP) mail server is:

smtp.uunet.co.za

Enjoy :)

Not sure if IMAP works, but POP3 using student.up.ac.za works 100%

The problem most guys are faced with is that they try the same server for external (SMTP) email. I see that you use smtp.mtn.co.za - you should have no problems sending email.

Next challenge for you will be to connect to the UP Intranet based on the existing Wireless networks they have up there. Not sure if they did change it, but there was a third party VPN client the last time I tried to connect... All from your JJ / K-Jam

Does Mtnloaded support IMAP4? I had some problems with MtnLoaded before - just want to know if anyone out there managed to get POP3 / IMAP4 working with @mtnloaded.co.za email account...

The pop3 works no problem...
Havent tried imap yet.

I have some issues with @mtnloaded.co.za with my I-Mate K-Jam though... The status bar shows that the messages / headers are downloaded, but nothing appears in my Inbox once the Send/Receive process in completed.

It works with my other POP3 accounts, just problems with @mtnloaded.co.za

CellC SMTP Server

The SMTP server to use with a CellC connection is 196.31.116.200 :D

@MTNBroadband

Thanks for the help while I was away
