Recently I have been experiencing very slow internet. I contact my isp, and they informed there is nothing wrong on there side and they restarted my port, which didn't help.

I then gave more though to the problem, and realized the problem started, after I convertered one of our e-mail accounts in the office from pop to imap.

Do you guys think this may be the reason for the slow internet?

I am on a 1mbps gold plus account from openweb, in the parow area, running 7 pc's.

i also have slow internet here (bellville area). our office in kenilworth also has a slow down today.
also someone tried to call on my landline from overseas which didn't work.

i wonder if there isn't a problem with some international link...

Local sites for me is also effected. Though it seems to fly now.

I've seen some reports of slow internet today, some 4M clients had 10s pings on unutilized lines ... also had some reports in Cape Town area too. No hard evidence where the problem lies.

Install Tracetcp and run a
tracetcp imap.youremailserver.com 143 -- check for any slow latency
Are you running on a shaped account - possibly they shape imap traffic but not pop3

Thing about IMAP is its pretty much connection dependant, if your connection is slow so is your email. I use SAIX Unshaped for my IMAP ... just because Shaped makes me start pulling out my hair.

Yes, I have come to the conclusion, I will have to upgrade to unshaped. Any suggestions for the best/value isp?
