iMessage not activating on iPhone 5

I don't think Apple needs your phone number. I use number or SIMs in iPhone 4, didn't see any link to phone number. It needs to approve OTA carrier settings for particular network and it has to do once.

So get prepaid SIM, load few bucks of airtime and when network is activated, swap SIM, it is over.

I doubt that would work.

The activation activates iMessage to the number in the phone, if you activate and change sims (and the second activation fails) the iMessages will either fail or deliver to the other sim if it is then used in another iPhone.

My wife ported from Vodacom - also no activation on her cellphone number for iMessage/Facetime.

I also suspect a routing problem on the activation SMS. Telkom Mobile call centre does not understand the problem.

This is an issue that Telkom mobile has no fix for yet I also ported a vodacom number to tm and have the same issues. I checked the apple boards and it is allegedly an issue with the SMS international send receive limitations on the side of TM so it's affecting activation for iMessage and FaceTime
Hopefully TM will address the fix in due course

Imessage finally activated on my cellphone number. Iphone 5 , ios 7.06
It only took a few seconds

Wife's also activated in just a few seconds. Our iPads picked up the activation too and we add our cell numbers to the send/receive list. Awesome, thanks again Telkom Mobile! Been having delivery problems between iMsg contacts of late so hopefully that's all over now.
